Filtering those pesky pine needles

So no matter what I do, I get many pine needles in my boat. Eventually they cause issues with my bilge pump. Last year I make a temporary basket that encompasses the pump and float from wire mesh, and covered in window screen. It works very well but the window screen needs to be replaced, before I just go with it again, I was curious if anyone out there had a more permanent, elegant solution?

Milwaukee makes a great portable M18 shop vac. I use it all the time to clean out my truck and also to get sand out of hard to reach corners of my boat. Would work fine on short pine needles, but maybe not on those really long ones
