Ferry fares going up again...

It's a viscous circle - they raise the rates because ridership is down and then ridership goes down because the rates are too high and on and on .......

Only businessI know where usage goes down after rate hikes they feel they should hike rates even more to make up for lost ridership and revenue.

SEE what happens when it is privatized and head CEO makes WAY to much money and now a buy out for years to come!!!! they are all laughing all the way to the bank with all the bonuses they will be getting saw that since year 2003 or something it will be up over 60% since present day WTF time for a union bust I know I said it but why does a guy who wipes trays down get close to 20 bucks an hour??? cmon reality check.....
This is only going to hurt tourism more and more fricken idiots

biggest mistake they made was to build cruise ships and not ferries, worked at Burrard shipyard way back. if they had built one ferry every 18 months would have kept the fleet up to date money would have stayed in BC.. You can price yourself out of the market. I went to the mainland last month hauling a 30' 5th wheel. $420 return. will be staying on the island for the foreseeable future.. Drop the fares increase the ridership. make your money on volume.. These guys could not organize a pissup in a Brewery..

I think they ment the gulf island runs when they say empty ferries.

I had a great experience last weekend going to vancouver. Showed up at 8 for the 9 which ended up being cancelled wasnt another till 11 then got to van to have the broken ferry sitting in dock floated around for 45 mins waiting for it to leave, a1 service. The cost to people who missed flights and a huge group who missed there cruise boat and a judge and a bunch of lawyers who had to reroute must have been huuuge.

^^^^^ Is any transportation service 100% reliable? I don't think so.

That said, BC Ferries has a major problem on their hands - saving $54B in the next three years is no easy task. For the people living on VI this is very concerning as it is the only way to drive off the island. Trips to Van are no problem - Harbour Air to dt and easy to relocate within LM from there. Anything else we're screwed.

When we are facing reduced sailings and uncertainty in an essential service I think it's time we did a little more to advocate.

Maybe they should legalize pot to supplement BC Ferries...

I do agree with the union comment - fully disect the operating cost

Unions are the problem to begin with. Union, just another word for greedy, lazy, self-serving...

A place where people are paid outrageous wages to do minimum wage work. It's no wonder the need to jack up the rates. Lets not forget unions reward seniority over skill. Meaning, you may be the dumbest sack o' **** on the job, but because you kept your head down for the last 20 years means you deserve the top position, regardless of education or experience. A place where everyone wants more for less. I can't believe the lives of hundreds of citizens are in the hands of the dolts that work at BC Ferries.

No offense to my buddy who works there of course. I really appreciate my cheap sailings when we bring you fishing. lol

The guys in my union do not do minimum wage work. Most of them hold multiple trade tickets, some with power engineer tickets as well as trade tickets, and work their butt off everyday in conditions that most people would not want to work in. Yes, we get paid well for what we do. Seniority does not get you promotions here. It is part of the promotion process, but promotions are not based solely on seniority. So your facts are skewed. To say we are all the same is insulting. I can admit some unions are like that, but not all. Sorry for the rant, it gets tiring hearing that I don't work hard and am overpaid.

The only time I ever head to the island anymore, is when my wife has to do some work over there. Her territory is all of the island. So I'll head over with her on a Thursday, fish with my buddy in Campbell River for a couple days, then come home. All on her company's expense. I won't travel there anymore on my own $$. Too expensive. I towed my boat over to Galiano in May, and that's the last time I will do that. It was just about $400 round trip. I'll fish locally if I want to fish salmon. I'll spend my money going up to the interior from now on. The ferries are too expensive. It's time for a bridge to be built connecting the gulf islands and Vancouver Island to the mainland. The toll would certaily be less than the cost of a ferry ride.

i dont think the ferrys to van island are the real problem its the one to prince rupert that losing big time also one to bella coola traveling with only couple of dozen cars; its the small ferrys that lose all the money; they need to reduce services on these runs; and raise fares on them not on van isle routes

Keep in mind that it is those people with decent paying Union Jobs that take out the charter boats, camp or stay in the Local Hotels. If we all go shopping at wall mart and work as greaters letting China Produce all the Goods we used to make because thier wages are cheaper we will just fight ourselves to the bottom, Maybe splurge on a farmed salmon when thier getting rotten and on sale. Don't take out the Outrageous Bonuses the Ferry Fat Cats are getting building thier Cruise Fleet in Germany on a person earning a liveable Union Wage. Cheers

Aww jeeze Finished Business, Take a deep breath. You CANT characterize a whole workforce like that. Remember, the marine workers are responsible for passenger safety too. Are there those that are milking the system-- no doubt. But who is responsible for allowing that? Just the Union .... or (GASP!) MANAGEMENT!!!

The paintbrush that covers all union workers with the same ****-- it worth that----****.

(now excuse me while I go wash my mouth out with soap for my potty talk... :-( )

Have two friends that work on the ferries. They both say half the people there ,they have no time for. Do nothing but ***** and complain about work and "cant leave cause they will lose there pension". The type of people who give unions a bad name. Sure would be nice to be able to get rid of the deadwood.

I don't think the union wage has much to do with the low ridership.

Since our dollar went par with the Americans, that meant less American tourists coming here.

Since the Ferry Corp, continually+continually raised the rates..... that meant a lot of local people think twice about a trip now. Notice the word "Corp."= Corporation...which is what B.C. ferries is........ a corporation requires overpaid CEO's, golden handshakes , gold-plated pensions, and golden parachutes. All the while making as much profit as they can squeeze out of us.

Thank Campbell for giving away perfectly useable ferries to his buddy Dan Washington for less than scrap value......only reason he got rid of them was because they were built by the NDP.

These ferries built in Germany that they are using, don't seem to be any appreciable improvement over what we already had.

You can't blame it on the unions for this one IMO.

I blame the Liberal government...and in the past Gordon Campbell.

It is actually pretty boring riding the ferries. You can only look at so much ocean and waves.

Back years ago they tried having bands playing on the ferries for entertainment. Nothing too heavy, just easy listening. It was quite good.....but they were getting complaints because the captains of the boats didn't like it.

Many of the smaller runs seem to carry more passengers and traffic on any given day than the Liberal Strait-crossing juggernauts.

I can't remember the last time I took a ferry to the mainland. I used to love going to Vancouver back in the day. Now I can't stand the place.
