Fairwinds Marina

Has anyone one who keeps their boat at Fairwinds heard anything about their moorage this up coming year? I received an email in February with the new cost for slips, but nothing since. Costs have gone way up, 7 K a year for a 35’ slip! Yikes.

I have the privilege of paying 4 grand a year for my 29' slip on the coast in a marina you can't access below a 3' tide. Used to be "dry at 0 tide" and the sign is still up as such haha. Yay!

Yes I know that marina. I really enjoyed keeping my boat in Secret Cove when I lived on that side.

Yep, our cabin is in Wilson creek within walking distance so it's just impossible to give up. When the othe guys were running it, costs were less than half and no drama. Far less so now...buddy just secured a 29 / 30'slip at SC, outdoors for just under 6 grand a year.

Renewals coming soon. I think mine went up $500 from last year. I live 4 min away and having my boat there is priceless!

I have been there 4 years now. Rates went up 10% per year until this year when it went up 23%. That have a captive audience and know it. The docks are new and nice but they were terrible up to now.

With the maintenance cost of a dual axle trailer and tow vehicle/insurance/depreciation those look pretty good.

Hmmm. My annual trailer maintenance is in the $100s. Truck maybe $1000, but I use it 10,000 km/yr for non-trailering activity. If the boat is in the water, the fuel bill per trip from south island to area 11 and 12 would be $1000+ per trip and I made 4 trips last year. By my math, the savings from not being moored paid for my trailer in a few years. But whatever our choices, we need some fish-math to support them ;)

The convenience is worth mooring for us otherwise we'd never use our cabin. Even paying for boat harbour plus pirate's Cove. What's another $2000 for a second slip... 30 minutes from door to door.

A boat that's already in the water is used more frequently.

Our rates in Sidney are brutal and I sometimes wonder if it’s worth, I use the boat much more and when I drive by the ramp it reminds me why I have a slip. Week night run to Browning or the Spit for dinner would never happen with a launched boat.

Seeing these prices sure makes me appreciate my $1500 annual slip. Usually sprinkle in one $1K multi day trip to the tip of the island, and one or two $300 trips September overnighters to Renfrew. Common theme of wanting to avoid boat ramps at all costs. They're clusters. I'm in/out a lot over the season and am able to fish a lot. Boat comes home if I'm away or not fishing for a while. I've tried to quantify moorage vs trailering for a season and for me it comes down to me preferring to fish more often and catching less. A full pull from a west coast trip up island is a ton of fish.
