Esperanza Prawning

I will be up fishing in Esperanza and Ferrer Point area at the end of July. I have never fished there before. While doing a bit of research I have heard some guys say you can catch prawns around there.

So I am wondering where about's do guys usually set their traps in this area?

Thanks for any info.

The commercials came through a few years back and pretty much wiped it out, but the prawning is now coming back. Try around McBride Bay where indicated. Should be really good there!

Thanks for the info Charlie.

Do you or anyone else know of any areas closer to Centre Island, Port Eliza, Ferrer Point or Catala Island for prawns?

Between Center Island and the SE shore of Nootka is a long, sandy bottomed trough. It can get as deep as ~ 60 Fathoms (360 or so feet) and while subject to some decent tidal influence, that isn't as great as over on the other side in the main channel. Anywhere in that trough and along that side of Center Island produces well - or at least is has thus far this season.

The locals from Zeballos have been setting their gear anywhere from right in front of that town, down through the inlet to the junction. Most set in 300 - 350 feet of water, and this year they have been enjoying tremendous success.

Commercial prawning is scheduled to commence around the 8th of May this year. Depending on how far they roam, and how long they work the area as to whether any given spot will still be producing by the time you get there. The Center Island shot is likely OK, as they didn't make it that far out last year (nor the year before if I recall correctly).

Hope that helps...

IronNoggin is correct.

You can try these areas, but watch where you set your pots. If they drop off the ledge you will loose them! Been there, done that!

that is a LOT of good info, had some decent days in Mcbride last year into June, even OK into July 04. I did better closer to the rock that Pacific safari hides behind.
