Engine trailering supports

I did a search, but couldnt find the thread that cover this one.

Question-- has anyone used this product. Seems like a simple, inexpensive solution to make sure the engine tilt doesnt fail during trailering.

I have an identical one to hold up my 30hp merc ,it works really well.I,m not sure how it would work for a bigger motor, never tried.

MAy not be thecorrect answer but to give you something to think about.

The problem occuring when trailering the outboard tilted up is the forces on the transom resulting from the motor bouncing as you drive. A transom save braces the motor a bit, but it also transfers a lot of the force to the trailer frame which is stronger than the transom.

The device in the picture changes the location of the forces on the transom, but they are all still acting on the transom. This causes the transom to flex and could result in its failure. This device will brace the motor and take the forces off the tilt lock, so would be good if that is all you are worried about.

So mu reaction is good for the motor but might not help with the transom.

I have had that exact same thing since I got my boat. Its great. I have a 100Hp Merc and it gives me a sense of security when travelling.

Here is a pic I have with it

Trailering a boat with a 400 lb plus engine, I looked at both units.
I opted to construct two rods that fit between the transom bracket and the motor. This only supported the weight in conjunction with the feeble locks that the motor was fitted with.
With my engine at full tilt, the weight was forward of the transom, not hanging off the back.
The brackets that mount directly to the trailer might be better as long as the boat was rigidly attached to the trailer so that the boat and trailer don't act independent of each other.
I think most motors, when fully tilted, are weight forward of the centerline of the transom, nes pa?

My 135 motor is on an (offshore/ouboard)bracket, and if using this product the full weight of the motor is still on th bracket.
Unfortunately the standard transom saver's don't fit. They're too short and because of length/angle from the trailer to the motor they can't go to support the leg as the bracket is in the way.

I'm looking for a place to have a custom one made, or modify the off the rack one I have.

Fishin' anywhere anytime for anything

Dont think the transom failure probablity is the same with a welded aluminum boat-- just want to make sure I dont end up dragging the skeg if the hydraulics fail

There is quite a discussion on Ifish about this item and it seems to be a good one. If you are interested in ordering one, let me know and I will get one as well.

Cheers

My 150 Opti's got a lock that engages once the motor is tilted all the way up and then you lower it on to the lock thingy, taking the pressure off the hydraulics.

Thought you got got a merc...no?

I have the my wedge on my 200hp Yammy 4 stroke on my Grady and it works great and hasn't failed me yet! Highly recommended in the states and it came with the boat that I bought in Ohio.

I don't use the tilt support lever on my 8 hp Yamaha and 115 hp Merc when I am trailering my boat. In my opinion the tilt support levers are not strong enough:( for trailering. I have a couple of special cut wood wedges (no cost):D that I use and I tie the legs down to the boat - hence no bouncing and the motor can not drop down if the hydraulics should fail.

first of all, your power trim and tilt wont fail. If it ever did, your existing factory manual lock will be sufficient. Dont waste your hard earned$!

Hey Gypseas-- my Merc manual says this about the tilt lock:--

IMPORTANT: Do not rely on the power trim/tilt system or tilt support system lever to maintain proper ground clearance for trailering.
The outboard tilt support lever is not intended to support the outboard for trailering.

I have emailed the supplier to see what his shipping charges to BC are-- NOT USING UPS! Ken-- if its good, I'll just order two and settle up with you later. OK?
