Elk Lake Baitrix Test Fishing

Was out at Elk Lake on Sunday June 13 test fishing the new Baitrix
tiny strip. Had 12 fish on in 3-1/2 hours fishing. Eight were on
the Baitrix strip; 4 each on the holo green and chartreuse colours
in the longer (salmon) size strip fished in chartreuse tiny teasers.
Kept two fish weighing 2 lb 6 oz and 3 lb 6 oz (20-1/2". Using
downriggers at 18 to 28 feet.

Have been eating the 3-6 this week and the meat is excellent with
no hint of algae taste. No evident algae bloom now so fish seem
to taste better. Water is still coloured but relatively clear.
Surface temperatures are up quite a bit from June 05 when I was
last out.

Anyone else had good fishing there lately?

Was out on Elk Lake again today testing the new Baitrix tiny strip.
Had a dozen hits - kept 2, released 5 and the rest didn't stick.
Caught a nice 2 lb 14 oz rainbow (20") and a 2 lb 8 oz cutthroat
(18-1/2") both on the chartreuse tiny strip fished off downriggers.
The water has continued to clear up after the last big algae bloom
and was quite clear today. The fish have been excellent eating
the last couple weeks. The 2-6 and 3-6 rainbows I caught last
weekend had no hint of algae (muddy) taste and the cutthroat from
today was just as good.

Here are pictures of the two trout in above picture showing new Baitrix tiny strip
still hooked in mouth. First attempt at uploading pictures to Forum posting. Above
picture went okay. Here goes nothing.

Do you scent the strips at all or just use them as is?
And are you fishing them with flashers or all by themselves?

how are u rigging up your baitrix lures is there a flasher on with them? how deep are u fishing and what size hooks ?

Thanks for the interest and questions. Have been fishing them off downriggers 17 to
28 feet lately. No flasher or gang troll although I have used them with success
previously. Reason is I like playing the fish without the extra weight and drag of
flashers or gang trolls. Fish the Baitrix tiny strip right out of the package without
any added scent although, I suspect, you could add extra scent and have good success.
I am using 12 lb leader now and Gamakatsu Octopus hooks in size 2 tied directly to
the line. Keep hook about 1/2 to 3/4 inch up from tail end of strip. Some fish
have been hitting the teaser at top end and pushing it tight against hook. I guess
this happens and there's nothing much you can do about this. Make sure there is tight
pressure on hook to move it by pushing toothpick tight into teaser blister. Adjust trolling speed so that strip revolves fairly fast in tight roll. Have been trolling
faster than most other trout fishermen. Will roll with 9.9 HP Yamaha high thrust
shut as slow as it will go but I like to troll a little faster than this.

Good luck to anyone else trying this fishing method. It's a riot with the light
10.5 foot rods and no weight on the line when the fish trips. Some of the bigger
fish hit so hard they are peeling line off the reel before you can get to it.
Let me know how you make out. Will be out there again over the next week as salmon
is so slow right now.

I recently purchased 4 packs of different colours and sizes (trout and salmon size)
at Trotac. They have lots of them and 3 pack unrigged tiny teasers in about 4 colours
as well. The pictures posted here are the longer salmon size strips. I have used
both sizes but if you are going to catch big fish you need big bait (sometimes?).
The holographic green works well too. Good luck.

I run the same gear up at cowichan. Does the trick. Big bait= big fish but remember that the rainbows by nature are a little shy thats why running these without the flasher works very well.

I did really well last weekend on the blue silver one @ 20ft
