Downrigger ball rubber snubber

I had a hang up a few weeks ago, running blue snubber, and I damn near pulled the down rigger off my gunnel before I decided to cut the down rigger line. Snubbers are tough.

You really need to back off your brake setting. Line should just pull out when that happens

Lost a ball to a broken Scotty snubber last week when fishing in muddy bottom. Been using them for years but I’m now questioning it. It’s just another weak link IMO.

Did half the snubber come back up? Maybe it got nicked or sliced somehow?

Yeah. I’m sure it got nicked as I had just re-tied the whole Surestop cord and replaced the old Snubber earlier this month. I was fishing pretty shallow that day and was just sending the gear down when I noticed there was no pull anymore.

I use the commercial grade/heavy duty rubber snubbers from Trotac - twice as thick and strong.

all junk, loop of tuna chord and a swivel. or a bigger knot for the stopper. adjust brakes properly.

I like the heavy duty rubber snubber as it can stretch and pull a cannonball lose (happened a few times) and if stuck really bad it breaks (as it is designed to do) and just lose the cannonball and not a lot of expensive line/cable and/or damage the downrigger and/or boat.

I like em for two reasons (1) easy to handle the balls and (2) prevents the system from being shock loaded - as much - when someone lets go of the brake too quickly while dropping the ball.
