So we're sitting around last night around 9;30 when the wife looks out the front window and says"Dave, theres someone in your boat... and he has your downrigger!" I jump up wearing a pair of shorts and a tee shirt, no socks etc.. Out the front door I go! The thugs must have noticed Sherry observing then as they were about a block away and running when I spotted them. So off I go, and I can run pretty fast. I caught up with them about two blocks away just as they were getting into their car. I started hammer fisting the drivers window hoping it would break so I can drag the hooligan out and give him a lickin. It wouldnt break. Thats when I noticed the rear door was ajar and there was my downrigger! I grabbed my downrigger just at the guy got his car started and smashed out his back window with it! It was awesome! I just wish I got to pound on the two thugs! The pricks got nothing but a broken window! Next time they wont get off that lucky.

Hope you got their license number.

Nice catch and release. Hope you reported it to the RCMP - would be so nice to add a little insult to injury there.

Good story!

to bad you didn't get a hold of one of them and use him for a sparing partner..chop,chop:eek:...and good thing those scotties are warantied for life;)....

you might want to check in with the bussiness in town that do glass replacement,
might find them that way:cool:

wow thats awesome good for you!theywill think twice about doing that again, low life assholes. whatwere they driving??

They might have **** their pants as well. They probably weren't expecting getting chased and a possible fist in the face. Hope you got their plate Number IFL.

Dave:

Make sure you report to RCMP and ICBC with a description of the vehicle and which window is broken. No doubt they will try and get it replaced without paying for it. Also, not a bad idea to contact the glass replacement dealers in the area to get them to keep an eye out for them.

Good luck.

that is awesome! But IFL, you know you are probably lucky they did get away - you'd probably be sitting in jail for assualt and/or get sued by the punks the way our legal system works. It had to feel good seeing them run like little cowards though!

OK guys - Here's a bit of 'legal' advice from a NON-LAWYER.

IF you catch the guys in the act of committing the crime, ie: stealing the downriggers off of your boat, you are entitled to perform a citizens arrest. Keep that in mind afterwards when you are talking to the police. (Tip: Do NOT TALK TO THE POLICE WITHOUT YOUR LAWYER).

Your mission is to stop the crime and arrest the suspects and turn them over to the police. You don't have to tell the suspects that they are under arrest, the fact that you have caught them will cover that.

Do not talk about 'self-defence' that is not what you are attempting to do. You are attempting to arrest criminals and to turn them over to law enforcement. This is key. It gives you protections under the law. It allows you great latitude in what you need to do to 'stop' the ciminals from escaping.

Be prepared to spend some time at the police station, and possibly in jail afterwards. Remember rule number one - DO NOT TALK WITH THE POLICE WITHOUT YOUR LAWYER. No matter how friendly they seem. They don't like it when you do their jobs for them. More people are convicted of crimes because they can't keep their mouths shut when talking with the police.

If you have just beat a guy unconcious with the business end of a Scotty downrigger, best to let your lawyer do your talking for you, especially as you will be charged with adrenalin. Also, watch what you say during the confrontation, you don't want that that coming back on you in witness statements. Remember the old cop/security guard trick: keep yelling "Stop resisting!" while beating the sh!# out of him. ;)

Good on ya Dave in stoppin' these twats....regardless of right now or not, I'll be buyin' ya a few pints in the summer havin' a chuckle as we lower the lines on those very downriggers.

Nice job Dave!

And X2 with what Sushihunter says.

Still, too bad you didn't catch the little beggars. Would have made a great front page story.

Good Job IFL... If we could get rid of some of these sh@$ heads the world would be better off. In my opinion they will be back though. These loosers do not like loosing and now that you broke their window they will want revenge. My guess a week later. Keep an eye out and maybe put your riggers in the house for a while.

Last week I watched a guy ride his bike up to my neibors house and jump their back fence so I went out and grabbed his bike. When he tried to come back over the fence he saw me sitting on his bike, All 6'5" 245lbs. He had the nerve to get mad at me for taking his bike. Mean while he has a bag of stuff he is stealing. I told him to put the stuff back or I would wrap the bike around his face... funny thing he listened and got really nice to me after that.

These guys are the scum of the earth and need to go away.

Let this be a warning to all do not buy used gear off craiglist or others simular sites unless you see a receipt. Let's not support these guys.

Homeowner gives chase

Know anyone with an older model, dark brown car…with the rear window missing?

The vehicle was used by a pair of thieves who tried to steal downriggers from a boat on Sunday night.

According to RCMP, it was about 9:30 p.m., when a home owner in the 800 block of Alder St., noticed two males taking the downriggers from his boat. The owner gave chase as the thieves fled with one of the downriggers and tossed it into the back seat of the car. The owner then reached through the window, grabbed his downrigger and then used it to smash the rear window of the car as the culprits fled.

Unfortunately Poppa Swiss is correct! Trust me on this one.

Was at Pacific Play Grounds today and the guy launching his boat in front of us realized someone was in his boat last night. They took his tackle box as well as other gear. He headed home to grab some more gear. Lock your boats up tight guys.
