Do your balls hang low??

I don't use fins and rarely see anyone using them out of tofino, locals that is. hmm.
Ya but that can be decided by who in the area is making balls and what they are charging. If someone is making cheap balls we are buying right? Some guys don't care what they use.

I always found when when running steel cable and round balls I had more kinks and line breaks. I always figured it was do to lousy swivels and the spinning of the cable using round balls. When I switched to finned weights the kinks and breakages were far fewer. Now that lots of us are using braided line this would be less of an issue. But then starts the issue of braided over steel, round verses finned and pancakes. I often don't even use swivels anymore with my braided line and finned weights as there isn't any spin in the line.

As I said it all how you learn to use your gear and use it effectively. Once you dial something in weather it be balls or something else your golden.

ya but, I never get tangles fishing up to 180 feet deep with round balls so why change. Thats just me tho. I guess if I did get tangles I could add more to the discussion. Maybe fishing off shore on the west coast has no currents to challenge my methods. I pour my own balls and have a round mould so if it aint broke, don't fix it.

Those pancakes with the ss fins are all ninja and $hit but I only ran 'em one season. Maybe I'll try them again one day, but I doubt it..... Brainless mofo that I am I'm good with what works without having to learn how to "use them to my advantage"....... Whatever that means. I'll just run my gear that works and is easy. On a side note I have a couple dozen ss fins if anyone wants them for pancake weights. Ok, cerveza time now :)

Andrew P-You're problem with the lines tangling could be from the balls swinging from side to side at the extreme depth you are fishing. Were you fishing in rough water at the time - boat rocking side to side? My guess would be to use 15 lb pancake weights to stop the pendulum effect.

i run 18 rounds, no fin, when draggin or deep winter fishn, like others posted, keep your gear tight to the ball. and make sure you are not lettin one down on top of the other..

Oh sorry, I thought the whole post was an analogy to low hanging balls...... Guess I took it the wrong way.

Didn't realize it was serious...... Carry on

That explains it all! Jeez, who knew the 'Mericans had it down pat. Canadians just need to learn from the 'mericans

If I'm down deep (160 or deeper)...I like to have one d/ball about 15 ft or so above the other.........especially when using flashers.......it's usually the flashers that cause the tangleup if they are side by side in depth.

My flashers are usually rigged to produce a big wide arc.......

If the flashers are at the same depth....you need to know how wide your d/lines are apart.......because if your d/lines are, say, 12 feet apart and your d/clip to flasher is 12 feet..then when the flasher swings over on a really hard turn it will chop away at the other d/line with a good chance of a tangle......
