Do any duolocks not suck?

Had to google what Hawaiian snaps were, but I use the same(always referred to them as McMahon snaps). I don’t find them difficult to use at all... trick I find is to push the bead chain(or swivel) into it versus trying to mash it open with fingers.

The trick to using them is not to use them at all. Works every time.

What’s wrong with a regular old snap swivel?

Not that much, if you get decent quality ones. With duolock is you can easily open either end, makes them more versatile.

I use my thumb nail to split the jaws to get swivel in

You guys are bending the jaws sideways? Interesting, will take a shot at that. It's never an issue in summer but sure, winter fishing with cold hands is definitely a thing.
