DFO. Port Alberni Sockeye and seines.. sent by Bob cole

Hello Bill,
The problem with the Dalai Lama’s statement is that it doesn’t hold true when the dialogue is just words.
A reliable source of mine told me Thursday, before our meeting, that they were to meet a particular seine boat anchored at China Creek Sunday evening if they wanted some Sockeye.
Obviously, as last week, the fishing times and locations had been pre-determined and our meetings are basically window dressing.
The same thing happened the week before where a notice of time and boundaries was issued by DFO before our meeting that was to discuss and define such times and boundaries.
Secondly, at this point last year there weren’t more than ten seine boats fishing and they were restricted to certain areas that allowed a reasonable area for the sport fleet to operate in. The seiners still caught their allocation over the season and a reasonable recreational fishery co-existed. It is obvious that the intention is to decimate the rec effort and the local economy.
When we asked for some consideration last week, we were told they would be in and out, no problem. When we asked for such an area and a Monday start because of the long weekend, we were ignored and were told by someone on the phone from one of the many processors that have somehow joined our committee (maybe we should have all the motels, hotels, restaurants and tackle shops in town join the conversation) that “we don’t recognize American holidays”. Well Sunday is still part of our long weekend and the 800 recreational boats fishing in the inlet and many of the hundreds fishing Barkley Sound are still likely to be fishing or travelling through on Sunday afternoon and even Monday morning. Compromise is a two way street and we are seeing only one direction from the seine sector.
To top this lunacy off, Diana Dobson’s and your option 1 and 3 don’t make basic arithmetic sense. To “catch up” and allocate more fish than are in the inlet and Barkley Sound according to your own test boat, even if you include ten to fifteen thousand recruitment a day, plans to take all of the fish. Do the math! That leaves few for escapement, few for First Nations and basically none for the sport fleet.
Undoubtedly, the local economy and the real taxpayers don’t factor into the process at all.
Therefore, and after discussion with my colleagues, I will not be participating any further in this sham process regarding Sockeye.
Best of luck,
Bob Cole

They did their first set at noon on Sunday and managed to get a rec fisherman and his boat into the net. Heard that all turned out OK but this is kind of problem could have been avoided by having them not fish on the long weekend. Perhaps DFO would like to rethink and error on the side of caution. As for a report, fishing is outstanding. Limits had by all.

par for the course, how are we supposed to respect the entity called dfo when all we see is a giant mess that they create, how are they helping anything, almost everything they touch they ruin or screw it up, i dont understand why we are constantly suprised all the time with their dumb mistakes and decisions, im really at a loss of what to think about their ridiculous decisions, i could never work for an entity that is SUPPOSED to benefit the greater good and constantly makes poor decisions, how are we supposed to NOT be cynical?..how can the on the ground workers put up with such idiocy?, i personally wouldnt be able to do it..holmes*

We're surprised because all of us believe that no-one could honestly be that consistently stupid Holmes. This isn't even a matter of naturally born stupidity anymore, seems like they are actually working hard to accomplish it.

Was!
I did not fish today.. talked to the creel lady this am about 9 she had just got there
She had just done 5 boats.. COMBINED total of fish was 5

Fishing is outstanding to fishing was outstanding, great, there goes my next trip.
Sorry guys out in PA, you wont be seeing my next tourist dollar.
To get the picture that would have been 3 guys 2-3 days spending 300 each in the town.
And we do it on the cheap. Stop at the local stores for dry goods and beverages.
Get fuel and pay for camping and launch fees. You know on the cheap.
Saw some rigs that would be 500 to 700 or more a day all in.
We have a wedding in the family this weekend and the plan was to take some of the boy's out after.
Will be sticking close to home now because of DFO. (Department for Commercial Fishers)
Can't wait for the derby NOT. Perhaps they could clean out the canal before the derby.
That way the weight in station labour could be saved.

Sadly, I must agree with CLG about the state of affairs in PA. I used to spend a considerable amount of time and money in PA during the summer. The fishing used to be great and china creek was a good family camp site to spend time at. No more trips there for me, I'm tired of fighting the nets to scrape up a fish or two. DFO has decimated this once great fishing location, and now that my kids are older I will spend my time and money elsewhere. I feel sorry for the great folks in PA, the town has taken enough hits already. I hope things improve there, but with the DFO in control I'm not holding my breath.

Good points GLG and TheBigGuy, it really is sad to see the kick in the jewels that Port Alberni gets every year at the orders of DFO (Decimate Fish in the Oceans). When you look at it, based on the decisions that DFO makes every year, one could only be led to believe that the DFO really doen't give a $#!T about anyone that has not already beaten them with the proverbial Legal beating stick. Perhaps if the recreational sector had hit them with the legal beating stick a few times in the past, then we would see decisions being made with some respect and consideration for our concerns. Really don't see a change coming in the future for us, and that PI$$E$ me off just as much as the slap in the face we get from all of the decisions that are handed out to us.

May skip it this year

Started fishing out of China Creek in '83, and Bamfiled in 88. The sound & Canal. Inshore only until last year. Always fished the derby. Last 2 years of the derby were brutal, if not for it picking up a bit on Monday last year it would have been really terrible.

This is the first year I haven't booked any accommodations/trips that way, and not planning to fish the derby weekend. Booked Tofino, and looking at Port Renfrew right now, but that's it.
From 8 x 3 or 4 day weekends from July to September to 0 (for now).

Sorry P.A./Bamfield, but I can work that hard for fish here in Vancouver.

Agreed DFO does not give a ****. I had a conversation with Bill Shaw DFO early last week about the state of the sockeye fishery in port alberni after the seines took 100 000 fish. He said "Sockeye is a commercial fish. The rec sector only gets 5 % of the catch. They must ensure the commies ARE ABLE to catch their fish. DFO gives piority to sporties for chinook and coho"

I call BS on that one after seeing DFO seine over the derby fish several weeks in a row before port derby.

I used to spend lots of $$ over here in a summer usually for up to 3 weeks. This year leaving early after a week. No fish to catch.
Port Alberni should launch a class action lawsuit against DFO

Port Alberni should launch a class action lawsuit against DFO

And that my friend is OVERDUE!
It does appear the only thing The Dino notices is legal action. I will indeed be investigating the possibility of just that.

Letcha know as it goes...

Choked (again!)

I did a public policy project for economics on how poorly DFO controls the fisheries in Port Alberni. In the interview portion our professor asked me if all my facts were accurate then why are they allowed to continue managing the runs? I had no answer.

If I was the Mayor for Port Alberni, I would be extremely Pissed Off, and would be ringing the loudest bell I could find. The businesses of Port Alberni should be a bit more than upset also, they are going to loose a ton of business.

Somewhere along the line this fauchen Bull ***** has got to be stopped. These people should not be allowed to manage the sand in a sand-box for Christ Sakes, let alone a complex resource such as fish. This all makes me so angry, I find it hard to speak straight, I start out with a thought and well it all goes to hell the more that I look at the present inadequacies and ineptitude of the system and the people running it.:mad::mad::mad: (i am only allowed to post 4 at once!)

This fricking disgusting. We slayed sox at this time last year. and all the way through july, I made plans to go last week but cancelled because of the commercial open. Figured give it a few days( much like we did last year) and should be gtg. Guess not.m.. No sox in the freeze for this cat. Looks like its a snooze you lose fishery.

If you want to know why it happens like this every year, just do a little research on who owns the boats catching the fish, who owns the processing facilities, and who owns and controls the distribution of the fish. Find that out and you will have your answers why this keeps happening. The whole 5% story is a scam, especially for the Alberni sockeye. Those fish don't swim anywhere near U.S. waters so that means there is only one other "big " interested player in all of this. There are some interesting changes in the works considering harvest opportunities for sports anglers next year. Can't say too much about it now, needless to say, we are working towards bringing harvest opportunities for Alberni sockeye in line with other similar opportunities across the province. Things are looking very good at this stage....we have some important support already on board....hopefully, things go as planned. Will try & give updates as they become available.....could be awhile before anything is finalized.
