DFO - Coastal Restoration Fund

I just saw this on Facebook.

“We’re committed to improving fish habitats in British Columbia through two recently announced projects funded by our Coastal Restoration Fund. We’re giving over $2.6 million to Raincoast Conservation Foundation to improve the Fraser River Estuary for the benefit of many fish species including juvenile Chinook, pink and chum salmon and we’re providing more than $1.5 million to the Squamish River Watershed Society to support the recovery of Chinook salmon. http://ow.ly/tF8U30krJ1o
#OceansProtectionPlan”

I’m a little skeptical but hopefully the money ends up improving fish habitat. I think the initial budget for the Ocean Protection Plan was $1.5 billion...... so far we’ve spent more money listening to whales than improving our wild salmon.

It shatters my heart knowing that Ottawa would rather give money to the Raincoast foundation then help recreational fishermen. It means things like seal predation on the Fraser will be completely ignored. Giving money to a group that wants recreational fishing completely shut down is a huge blow.

Misty with the Raincoast foundation as already publically announced she wants area 29-3 closed. This is devastating.

The fact they gave this money to Raincoast rather the PSF speaks volumes about who they are politically trying to dangle carrots in front of.

Raincoast Conservation Foundation
We use rigorous, peer-reviewed science and community engagement to further our conservation objectives. We call this approach ‘informed advocacy’ and it is unique amongst conservation efforts. We investigate to understand coastal species and processes. We inform by bringing science to decision makers and communities. We inspire action to protect wildlife and their wilderness habitats.

Why is an advocacy group getting money for restoration projects?? over a restoration group like PSF!!!

"The Pacific Salmon Foundation, founded in 1987, is a federally incorporated non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wild Pacific salmon and their natural habitats in British Columbia and the Yukon. Operating independently from government, The Foundation facilitates dialogue and undertakes positive initiatives in support of Pacific salmon amongst all levels of government including First Nations; as well as industry, communities, individual volunteers and all fishing interests. "

Perhaps before taking potshots for your agenda you should ask if this money for their project is worth it. Most of us can see what your doing here since you moved in. Were not impressed and where to surprised either.

So you think this money was not politically motivated? you don't think PSF or SEP could of put this money to better use?

That the government is better off funding an ENGO that wants to end chinook fishing.

There is zero doubt as to Raincoast's objectives and ongoing strategy.
They were openly & largely involved in securing the closure to the grizzly hunt NOT based in science, but rather emotion (which they themselves created & fanned furiously). They are openly opposed to any form of consumptive use, and have stated that black bear, cougar, wolf and "trophy" sheep hunts are next on their list to target.

They have also noted their stance regarding sportfishing.
And GLG, that ain't in your (or our) favour whatsoever.
Letting these known anti's get their foot in the door is simply our current government agreeing with their stance.
Project be damned, they are one of our enemies, and made stronger by this move.

In this case, I agree with the previous poster...

Cheers,
Nog
