Department of Fisheries Officers

I don't really understand your premise.

Are you saying that telling a dfo robot that half the catch in your boat was caught yesterday is a viable defense? Sounds like bad advice...

Non of what I’m saying is advice, we’re just people on a forum having a chat.

They have to prove “continuity”

Topics like this is discussed at local Sfac where you can talk to DFO officers themselves.

This is also why it’s changeling to prove illegal fish sales, fish laundering ect

I don’t think most people would think fighting a fine in court is worth the couple extra fish. That’s why I say fine em and let them have their day in court. At the same time tho can’t just fine em they could have legitimately spent the night in their boat.

These reason are why I believe most of the time people are fined for being over twice their daily limit.

Happened all the time to in sockeye days guys would get their wives to meet them at the docks drop of their catch and go back out.

So, does this mean you can never go on a multi-day fishing trip sleeping on your boat and catch more than one day's limit up to your possession limit?

This has been discussed plenty you can catch your daily limit, you can only retain up to your position limit over multi days, you can eat fish in the boat they are subtracted from your possession limit not your daily limit. Ie if if your allowed 2 chinook daily and eat one that does not mean you can go catch another one.

I find this hard to believe.
I agree. One better have dam good evidence they were on the water overnight or fishing multiple days if they have their possession limit. The few times I've dealt with the DFO, they seemed to think they had no burden of proof. Fishery offenses seem a lot different then criminal or traffic offenses. It’s good I take it a lot more seriously than I use to and more serious than a lot of friends who haven’t spent as much on a boat and gear.

The crown on vancouver Island has been way to eager to throw the book at people than I would like.

People love the idea of 0 tolerance and mandatory minimums until someone they care for is charged.

Hope your friend gets off.

I remember reading one case about did DFO have the right to search a boat under the fisheries act simply because the boat had a cooler hanging off the back

Buddy got a barbed hook ticket AT THE DOCK. Had 8 tie ups done up. 4 barbless 4 not. Officer accused him of using the 4 barbed that were on dash/in tackle box . No proof. Absolute joke. Took it to court but the court timing were always during day when bud was at work so he missed a lot of work and juts paid the fine as was losing more money by not working. What they hope for.

I believe it 100%

The above DFO bs is why many have quit sportfishing for salmon. DFO has so over-regulated things that they have taken all the fun out of fishing for salmon. Slot limits, gear restrictions, whale restrictions, MPZ's, cod release device, boundaries all over the place, calendar variations, in season changes, and the occasional power hungry fish cop just for good measure.
I commend those of you still willing to go fishing with the level of DFO BS you have to put up with just to keep a couple of fish for the freezer.

I welcome my interactions with DFO. I’m always in compliance so it’s easy for me. It’s much harder for them tho as I have a lot of advice and information to pass along to them during our time together. Usually they leave at WOT as soon as they can 😉

Yeah at our Sfac meeting the front line officers were saying they were getting an earful from everyone after the restrictions went in.

Guess I must be the exception here, I have been fishing for well over 55 years and all my encounters with DFO although infrequent have been courteous and professional.
I was boarded once by DFO, had all my gear checked, politely told to make sure I remember to crimp the uncrimped lures in my tackle box before I used them and then off they went. They were courteous and easy to deal with at that time.

Same officer in both cases!!!! Knew it!!! Some people shouldn’t be officers and abuse it. This person is a perfect example. Most are AWESOME. Our local officers are really great. The guy who abuses his position is a travelling one and isn’t local to where my buddy is/was.
