Comox Lake Main Gate

IF you havent already heard Timerwaste has now gated Comox Lake Main, Just past the dam at THe courtenay Fish and Game club. I confirmed this myself this morning. The guy at the gate said the cumberland side was also gated.

I heard Duncan bay Main is next.

THis cuts off all access to 1000's of hectares of prime crown land used for hunting and fishing. Pretty soon the entire island will be gated. What can we do?

I know our local F and G were in talks or something but i dont know whats happned since.

Who owns the gates and the land that they are on?

Do not do what wstcoaster suggested. You could trap some guy like me in there hunting with his kids. I have the keys, find someone who will cut them and we'll give them out to everyone. Problem solved.

Courtenay F & G owns the land that part of the road passes through. They are, however, into a long term access agreement and can do nothing about it. I talked to one of their directors this morning. TW won't even answer their calls. Same thing in Nanaimo. TW land is gated everywhere with No Trespassing signs posted all over the place. TW tells people to call the Nanaimo F & G Club because they have an access policy with them. Not so! They are firm on their No Access policy!

SO whats the solution>? it seems solution of the radical nature ar eth only way these days because the powers that be are not reasonsible.

To my knowledge, only if they hold the deed to said land. The road has to be private or otherwise the gate means nothing.

The land that T.West has gates on is mostly private land, and goes back to the 1890's "slippery Deal" that James Dunsmuir had with the early colonial government.Dunsmuir a member of the early government, and owner of mines in Naniamo, was given 20miles of land on each side of the island railway ,if he put the railway in!Later he sold the land to CP rail ,then sold to pacifc and finally ending up a multi national company named T.West than couldn't give a sh_t about anything on the Island owning all this "private"land.Their only agenda is shipping raw logs,so they are putting gates all the way up the Island ,so Joe public cann't see how their raping the land in the name of $$$

Blink is correct, a shady land swap for railway years before us, the land is private then becomes crown, gates are on private. Same thing in Vic now the watershed owns most of the land as after the trees are gone the land was traded to the CRD and Vic watershed, now the gates keep all out. I do not think vandalism of any sort is the answer, not to defend the logging company as I am a hunter but the last few falls I have been discused with my fellow "hunters" and the trail of garbage, beer cans, dumped junk and wrecked machinary. I am a responsible hunter who would be willing to pay access fees, $500 seams little for the hours of enjoyment. Maybe a club and access fees like in the US would allow all party's to remain happy, so far the loggig company wants no part of any deal and only no access?

Remember when the forest companies used to HAVE to allow access to the public plus create and maintain campsites for the RIGHT to log crown lands? My how the times have changed.

I came over from the mainland and a buddy from Nanaimo and I heard that Willemar and Nimnim were great fishing with little pressure. We went via Port Alberni and with some perseverance, unlocked gates and some luck we made it to Willemar. When we decided to head out via Comox Lake Main we were stopped by the "locked gate". We back tracked all the way to Port Alberni again. It's obvious the logging companies haven't read the same books and websites we have about the area. No one mentions locked gates. There has to be some responsibility from the logging company if someone gets "locked in" due to their arrogance. I guess the backwoods is no longer "open to the public". By the way Willemar was beautiful. Bring a blow torch!

Remember that we're not talking about Crown Land here. This is private property and like it or not, TW has the right to gate their property. There's not a lot that we can do about it unfortunately.

Good point vetteman, I'm not about damaging private property, or tresspassing. At the end of the day I want to find what everybody else is looking for, that nice treasure of a lake where I can catch fish and relax. Any tips about some Island Lakes would be appreciated.

My cousin's a forester up island. He was telling me about companies pushing to gate roads that access active areas due to vandalism of equipment, to the tune of $100k's. Stuff like yarders being lit on fire. Hard to blame them for that but still a **** off. Classic case of a couple of meatheads ruining it for everyone. Why not gate them closer to the active sites then, not a main access road! Guess they save on the # of gates needed then?
