Excellent research, which helps shed important science-based advice on how the recreational fishery can reduce the effects of FRIM on coho. I think this research will have longer term contributions to shaping how the fishery is managed and encourage adoption of further best practices such as limiting handling of fish using a gaff to release fish not being retained which prevents scale loss and fin damage. Also shifting to smaller hooks and practicing avoidance of areas where there are high encounters of coho if they are not intended as catch. Also makes me question the utility of hatchery retention only - maybe we should simply let people get their 2 coho and move on to doing other things taking into account the post release mortality effects.
