Child killed by speedboat in North Vancouver

Dude was ripping back and forth in the 5 knot and that thing isnt exactly inconspicuous. Bad decisions all around, that area is a disaster zone on days like these.

Lives are now ****** all around.

Really sad to hear this.

Was out in the Pitt River & Pitt Lake yesterday. I've been out every 1-2 weeks for the last 2 months and it has been pretty slow/empty until this weekend - tons of boaters, and the marina parking lot was full for the first time of the season

I always see people screaming through the slow zone at Grant Narrows - which is packed with kayakers and canoeists going back and forth to Widgeon. Just a reminder - slow down. Its not a race. I wish Port Metro Vancouver would put out some 'Dead Slow / No Wake' buoys. There are some tiny ancient signs on the shore pilings, but no one can see them and people routinely fly through that area.

"The operator of the speed boat was arrested then released with conditions early Sunday evening while police continue to investigate the cause of the fatal crash. A court date has been set for Aug. 27."

As a society we go waaaaay too easy on idiots like this.

The issue is it will be very hard for investigators to place him behind the wheel. He'll absolutely lawyer up, and they will work reasonable doubt beyond belief. Maybe the driver jumped overboard? Perhaps he was so distraught he evaporated?

The fact he's been released on conditions, and has a court date pending, there's a ton not being released as they build a case against whomever was running that piece of **** in those waters.

Get finger prints off the throttle/keys and steering wheel and any other witnesses who saw it, hopefully there's video or pics of driver out there to bring some kind of closure to family of lost child..such a messed up thing to happen to the parents

One cool option would be for him to say yep it sure af was me and my buddy with me provides sworn statement supporting my absolute culpability.

Pleading guilty at the first reasonable opportunity is a mitigating factor at sentencing.
Multiple previous DUIs will be an aggravating factor at sentencing, if this is true.

Just after 6 p.m., John Belisle and his wife were in their kayaks when they spotted a boat leaving Deep Cove at speeds of about 80 km/h. It was initially beside with another watercraft, said Belisle, and he wasn’t sure if they were racing or travelling together. But within seconds, the Scarab left the other boat behind in its wake.

“We’ve never seen a boat going at that speed that close to shore,” he said. “We were just dumbfounded.”
Belisle and his wife visually followed the boat until it disappeared around the bend as it approached Cates Park. “Both of us were going ‘I hope that person doesn’t get a kayaker.'”

Police have not identified the operator of the boat, but friends and acquaintances who know him told Postmedia the man is a 38-year-old North Vancouver resident, and an avid boater.
He also likes riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and knows how to fly helicopters.

At the time of the crash, the man was with his girlfriend, a male friend and a fourth person.

He's been named over on Reddit.

Apparently he crashed a helicopter near Meager Creek in 2023.

Global News has a clip on their website that lists out all the charges and infractions for dangerous motor vehicle operation for the alleged boat driver.
