Charters Creek Help!!

The Juan De Fuca Salmon Restoration Society is presently erecting a salmon interpretive centre and demonstration salmon hatchery on Charters Creek. Charters Creek is located just before the Sooke Potholes Park and runs into the Sooke River. This is one part of a four part project that has been under way for the past two years. To date a previously damaged section of the stream has been restored to allow salmon to spawn. This included creating riffles, bank stabilization, gravel beds, and the adding of woody debris that juvenile salmon will use for cover. Improving and lengthening of an existing side channel is also one of the tasks yet to be completed.
We are looking for any help we can get to reduce costs with the construction of the two buildings. Are there any semi-retired skilled trades people out there with an interest in fish habitat who have some free time on their hands? We will need a licensed electrician and a plumber. If you have time and a skill we can use your help...drywall, finishing carpentry, roofers, (will be metal roof) painters etc. We won't turn anyone willing to help away. At present the foundations are done and framing will begin soon. Send me an email if you would like to get involved.

Profisher--I'm not a tradesman but if work is going on during weekends, I'd be glad to lend any help I could. Send me a private email if you want to get a hold of me.

By the way we are able to issue a tax receipt so you can claim the donated labour.

Roof trusses went up on Friday on the main centre building. Starting to look impressive, will be a great centre for Sooke.

Just wanted to bring this back up to the top of the list. If you guys check out the society's website there are now some pics of the creek and the buildings that are presently under construction. The website will have more new content added once this years salmon returns are in the creek. Go to (www.salmonforsooke.com)

Congrats on 1000 post Profisher! I am a floorlayer and if there were to be any help in that respect id love to help!

We might need you once we get to the mez level where there will be some kind of flooring to install. Concrete slabs on both buildings main floor. I've talked to Wally Vowles about your offer and he will let me know if we can use your skills once we get that far along. Thanks Rollie

was up at the creek yesterday after fishing and the recent rains have brought some chum and maybe a coho or two up into the pools above the bridge. A really nice place to watch salmon returning home. Should be lots with the next rain.

Work on the salmon interpretive centre and hatchery is coming along. The big front entrance timbers are going in place now and then the front half of the metal roof can be finished. The directors have estimated we will need about another $90,000 (above what we have on hand) to complete the centre and hatchery. Anyone out there feeling generous towards a worthy cause? :)

Here is a picture of the new Charter Creek Salmon Interpretive Center. The big timbers should all be installed by tomorrow.

Here is the lone volunteer helper working along side the 3 die hard society directors. Today they were clearing/burning branches, cutting stumps down to grade, general cleanup while they wait for more timbers to arrive tomorrow. Hope more guys can get up and help out. I think there are plans for an all assault with 20 or so volunteers for a day to frame the hatchery building. Will be a weekend day coming up...hot dogs, burgers and beer will be supplied!!!

This is the Creek flow today. Lots of Chum moved up into the pools and side channel the last 2 days. The river is high right now so it is not best for viewing. Should be great by the weekend if it doesn't rain to much. I did spot 1 Coho in the upper pool.

Here is the latest on the project. We have secured the funds in the past week to complete the Charters Creek Salmon Interpretive Centre and the hatchery buildings. We are now installing the electrical and plumbing are now going in, followed by insulation and dry wall after passing inspections. We have to complete the buildings by the end of the year and there is still much to do. The pics I've included show one of the Galloping Goose Trails bridges and its proximity to our site. (you can see our building through the trees along side the road) Also a recent pic of Coho spawning in the creek. I counted a dozen Coho in the pools I could get to.
