hello everyone

i want to take my father in law on a chartered fishing trip.

which spot should i go out of on vancouver island for the best chance of catching salmon and/or halibut in mid august?

sooke? uclulet? port renfrew?

Thanks.

Mid August, you should be in good shape for both Salmon and Halibut in any of the places you mentioned. Be sure to check out the guide service prior to booking. Some guides are very good and some not so.

Jacky- any of those place will have good fishing @ that time it's a matter of what suits you best;Ukee has all kinds of accommodation & restaurants but it can be jammed full, Port Renfrew is a smaller place not as much for facilities but not as crowded fishing and access to Swiftsure Bank, Winter Harbour is a long drive and it'll be tough driving home tired after long days on the ocean, Sooke accommodation is limited but it's close to Victoria which has everything you want.

People here are reluctant to say one place is so much better but they all have their favourites-think about how much driving you want to do before & after (including ferry rides) my guess is that Sooke will come out on top just for ease of access.

We did Trailheads charter a couple yrs back and it was amazing. We limited on halibut, snapper, picked up black cod and a couple lings (we didn't salmon fish because we were already salmoned out). They have a stay the night prior package and be on the dock at 6am which works great. Take late ferry, sleep at the dock (nice hot tubs) and fish all day. Vacuum packed everything and off we went. We went out with the young lad (19 at the time) and he was a hell of a guide. Boat was awesome (25" walkaround with twin 250's). Can't say enough about them. You can google the name. If not them, there are lots of others but with short notice you might need to make some calls.
