Cell phone coverage offshore Ucluelet.....

Hey mates,

A friend of mine is looking to do some ocean research offshore Ukee. Straight out from Amphtrite point before Amphtrite bank and he was wondering if he can use cellular service to communicate his information. Do you guys recall getting service out that way? If so, which provider?

I can text 12 miles off shore from Tofino in immaculate weather with telus. One would think ukee would be even better.

I believe you don't lose your cell phone untill you hit the rats nose about 25 miles out......

I loose Telus around 30-35 miles out.

Ukee has that Mt. Ozard with all the radio goodies on top of it. Tofino doesn't.

If he has to have service and can't risk not then he could always buy a booster. I think they're a couple hundred though.

Has anyone ever used a booster. There seems to be a few different kinds out there from a sticker for the back of a phone to a aerial that sticks on the window of home or car that is wireless. Seems to be some controversy about these but I think they would work. For years while in the inlets I used to just hold my phone against any radio aerial to get enough service to make a call. That has always worked for me but I am looking for something better. Not for $300 tho, not yet.

For years I had used Rogers off shore, and 2 years ago I switched to Petro Canada Mobility and have the same good cell service off shore. Inside Bamfield is another story - not so good.

Makes sense.....Petro Can runs on Rogers network anyhow. You just changed who you pay your bill to and likely the dollar amount.


As others have said....TELUS in my experience is the best on the WCVI. My corporate phone switched from Telus to Rogers last year and I couldn't believe how much worse the Rogers coverage was. (In Vancouver too!!!)

I used a booster at my workshop cause there was bad service there, it was an antenna on the windshield and worked to get a couple more bars. since I got the iphone I haven't needed to use it, not sure if the phone is better or they fixed up there tower a bit.

Not much help here, I've used a booster but it was one of the expensive aerial mounted types. A cord ran from the aerial to a little pad that you held against your phone. Worked great...

The older the phone the better the service you'll get, new smart phones are crap. It would almost be worth picking up a really old pay/talk flip phone with a pull out antenna.

aYup! Telus is really the only choice for out on the Big Pond.

As far as boosters... We used to run one on the troller (always looking for ways to improve on communications). It was mounted up at the top of the mast. While it made a little difference, little was the operative word. Got a few extra miles of range was all, dead areas were still basically dead areas. That was one of the expensive ones. Not worth the jingle IMHO.
