Carmanah Halibut

Looking for advice on fishing hali off Carmanah next year. Maybe it's not worth effort? Anyways, I'd like to give it a try. If I tried trolling the bottom up there as I'm told some do, is the structure of the bottom past Carmanah suitable for doing so? Any areas to avoid? Thanks

It's very worth the effort. As far as areas to avoid, no there are not other then the Rockfish closures, if your water is 100+ feet, don't worry about ti. Don't bother trolling, they are not thick enough.

Throw your anchor on a day with less then 1KNT of tide, (Preferably an ebb), put down your bait of choice and wait. On Pink/Sockey heavy years, salmon has an edge, don't forget a trusty cut plug herring, and wait.

As far as spots, there are plenty of them, any sort of structure is good, the little bump off the point gets hammered, so choose any of the drop offs to the southwest and fish... There is no real "spot", the who area can be fishy, but best along the structure. Use big hooks as you will have to generally clean the rockfish out of a hole, so if you have big hooks the little guys generally will nip at your bait but not get caught and reeled up.

Excellent. Thanks for the LC.
I sent you an email.
