Heya!

Bringing the family for a paddling trip next week from Sechelt up the SW zone of Sechelt Inlet (from Tuwanek to Kunechin Pt).

Trying to figure out which and how many set-ups to bring for canoe trolling and shore casting? Open to any suggestions as to what is running or gear to bring (mooching, trolling, spin casting, dragging flies? ).

Coming from the Kootenays so any (most) advice is welcome!

Many thanks,

Chris

You might find some pinks heading up Salmon Inlet. They go up Sechelt Creek and school at the mouth. The will have to pass by Kunechin Pt. on their way there. If you can find a school you can cast the traditional pink salmon lures to them. Might be a bit early but hard to tell with the huge run this year.

Sechelt Inlet is great for paddlers, as power boat traffic is sparse due to the challenge presented by Skookumchuck Narrows. And the provincial park there has lots of little kayak-friendly camp locations.

On the fishing side, it's a fjord. Any salmon there are heading to spawning streams. You might get lucky and find yourself in the middle of a run, or you might not. There won't be much in the way of local feeder fish. For bottom fish, you'll need to find structure, pinnacles or ridges that are a break from the usual fjord profile that is just as steep below water level as above. Look on Navionics app for rockpiles or ledges at the base of cliffs, those should be good lingcod/rockfish habitat.
