Calkins trailer advice

Here's the trailer with all the new assemblies on them. I was able to save the bunk rollers as they were in good shape.
Trailer is working great now. Thumbs up to Sculpin for his good work making up the copies of all the assemblies.

Job well done,I don't understand why new trailer manufacturers don't use keel rollers any more? That's where the hull is the strongest.

If you use just bunks, you only need 2 support cross members, as soon as you go to keel rollers you need more cross members. more rollers and all their accouterments. All this adds up to extra dollars on the cost of the trailer. You know how much it cost to replace the keel rollers, and just the support for the bunk rollers. Could easily add $1000 or more to the trailer cost. The boat manufacturer will sometimes include a trailer as part of a package. Often the new style "float on". Cheapest to manufacture. Mr Woods trailer is much better suited to launching and retrieving more then just a few times a year. The effort to crank it on is minimal compared to one with just bunks. Properly adjusted the weight is supported by the keel rollers the bunk rollers are just for alignment, and will support minimal weight

Who is this sculpin fellow and how do I get ahold of him! I have the exact same trailer. And I need to redo my rollers too. I know this thread is 8 years old 😅

He had a metal shop in Nanaimo but it went out of business. Haven’t heard from him in years. Was a very popular member on here for many years.
I may be selling my trailer. Depending on how the weight is going to be distributed with the new pod and outboard.

move your axles back to account for the weight

I will chime on this one on your caulkins. Sell the trailer and upgrade. Upgrade to either a single wheel like a have with bigger axle etc or go to double wheel.

When I podded the boat it really changed the loads on trailer especially when you had to set wheel back etc. It wasn't like inboard.

I was burning out bearings because of it and eventually led to failure that cost me the trailer. Almost took boat in the ditch on alberni highway.

Also ditched the rollers for bunks and found it better for pod and weight distribution.

Thanks for the advice. I think I’m going to be changing the trailer. It is a good heavy duty trailer with single 6000lb axle but needs to be a bit longer for the change to pod and outboard.
