Cabo Dreaming- On a Viking 62

A prayer was answered and My wife and I were invited for a day trip on "The Retriever" Martha and Larry Warlemonts 62 foot custom Viking sports fisher. Laid down 10 years ago in New Jersey she has 8000hrs on her twin 1500 hp Detroit diesels. Top speed 36 knots, cruise at 26. Martha is a fishing fanatic-particularly for bill fish-unbelievable but she won 1.1 million this year(2013) in the Bisbee. Was trying to convince her to come up for the Bamfield Tuna shootout-LOl before we start I did not offer to pay for fuel or moorage etc.-I would have needed a loan just for that. She asked us what we wanted to fish for -I sensed her disappointment when my wife said Tuna-she said they were hard to come by but she'd try 7 Am-cabo harbour inspector checked all our fishing Lic. (never seen that before) And we were gone. I wondered about ice for the Tuna but of course the Boat has an ice machine that flows ice into the fish holds at 30 lbs an hour. We didn't clean up-the Tuna were illusive-we got 12 yellow fin all under 40 lbs-average probably 20-all on multiple hook-ups- I learned about splash bird set-ups, clones cedar plugs, x-raps-how the aray should be presented Etc etc. Saw more porpoise than I have ever seen before. My wife had a great fight from a 30 lb Dorado. We had an amazing time-I spent hours figuring what I'd do with that boat on WCVI but as I said to my wife even if you won a million bucks you could not operate that boat and her crew. So we are not entering any Lotto with a prize of less then 50 million. Tuna picures except for loins are hard to come by as the action was all multiples-no bloody decks here and the tuna immediately were iced and while we had lunch-cleaned-very civilized-the excitement was the same though!!!LOL so I won't yak anymore and let the pictures tell the story!!

Geez Spring Fever--you've got to stop taking your life in your hands going out in those leaky little Mexican pangas! :D
Looks like a great trip!

Setting off and into a Dorado-the face mask is the latest "cool" thing for deckhands-scared of skin cancer or of my picture taking ability.

Nice day on a great boat! I've definately read a couple of articles about her.

That's strange how slow it is for those yellow fin tunas this year but looks like you'll be eating well for a while, Mike.

I wanted to document everything but it was amazingly tough-the deckhand Omar and Tony the captain were so efficient that fish were iced and cleaned before you knew it. I also got the sense that the size of Tuna and the fact they weren't fishing Billfish had a lot to do with my ability to get pictures. I think I have the Tuna itch -just what I need -more tackle.

Good for you that looked like a great time. Man the maintenance and time involved with keeping that boat in ship shape would be a tall order. Very cool boat and pics!!

You are right about the time and maintenance. The captain Tony and his brother Omar are employed full time-6 days a week-the boats glass looks better than new. During the Bisbee another 2 deckhands are brought on. Any major maintenance is done in San Diego about a 72 hour run!! The crew handle oil changes etc.

Awesome!! Very nice vessel and looks like a great day in nice seas!!

Yeah -the fishing wasn't fast-I think if my wife hadn't wanted Tuner so bad we would have been better going for marlin-lots of them around-but you couldn't beat the day or the boat!!

Man that is a nice sportfisher. There really are some beauty boats down here, some with Victoria BC on the transom too. Charter guys I talked to today say it's just going to get better this week as the full moon starts to wane....... Lots of flags up on the boats I checked out this morning.......better send fishtofino an email :)

They were doing well for marlin early in the day with bait at the Golden Gate-Yellow fin are pretty scratchy and under 40 for the most part at Hime bank(spelling)-this is out of Cabo-are you in Jose del?
