Buzzbombs

Can I trade out the treble for a single and still have the right action on a buzzbomb? Ive been casting for salmon and getting lots of quillback rock fish and they are hard to unhook with the treble.

I think Ive also been catching a ling. My rod feel like a i have a fish small ticks and then just bends over and stays there like a i caught a snag. Is it the fish just going back into his hole? I reef on it and nothing happens but when I let it go slack I can eventually bring it back up.

yes-- you can use singles, but you need to hit a tackle shop NOT A BOX STORE---and buy some different bumpers. They are cut on the bias so that the hook stays straight. (Just ask the salesperson for single hook buzzbomb bumpers-- much easier than my trying to explain :-) )

As far as lings-- nope-- you are draggiong across the bottom until you hook a rock. But letting the line go slack , you let let the buzzbomb drop off what is holding it. When you do get a ling-- you will know quickly that you have a fish.

Just a though-- maybe you are letting your buzzbomb sink too close to the bottom if you are getting rockfish.

If you use single Siwash-type hook IMO you don't need to change bumpers....the end and the eye on those is about the same size as a treble.

See the Tying Tackle thread...I have a pic where I show a treble with one tine cut off.......easier to get out of Rockfish etc. than a treble 'button-up; at times.

I prefer Spinnow over buzzbombs. The buzzbomb is good in shallower water.......but it flutters so much it takes a longer time to get it down in deep water and you get species you don't want on the way down.

If you get a big ling on , a lot of times it is like winding in a large bag of rocks. They will "hold" and remain motionless for awhile and then take off in a spurt for deeper water.

On initial hookup, you might feel you have caught an old tire.

I always use jigs with big hooks on for Ling. Big Ling have BIG mouths...and many a time a small treble will just not penetrate of any signifigance......so the hook pulls out on the way up.

Smaller Lings are much feistier and have more get-up-and-go. Even had small lings "tail-hop" across the surface.

I've tried single hooks on jigs.........but IMO the treble will produce better.

Maybe you are hooking an octopus once in awhile.........I've had that happen before.

"If you use single Siwash-type hook IMO you don't need to change bumpers." true-- but the bumper keeps the hook aliened with the buzzbomb. And the question was about single hooks-- with the spinnow, he will have to use pliers to cut off the treble and replace it with a LARGER hook in order to get the same holding power that a treble has. The bumpers are dirt cheap and easy to use in cases where you want to keep the damage from a treble to a minimum by changing to a single.

ok good to know I can do either! tied on a single with original bumper for tonight's night bite (still just rockfish), then picked up a pack of the angled bumpers on way home! I like to know my options! thanks guys! ps im a she not a he :) I like spinnows too but ive lost 2 last summer and havent replaced them. Im using up whats in my tackle box before I break the bank.

Don't know if they are still available but single hooks were purpose made for fishing Buzz Bombs. The eye was bent over so that he hook was straight out the back of the Buzz Bomb. Some hooks could likely be modifed with a pair of plyers to do the same thing.

I always use singles on buzz bombs but instead of the stock bumper I use a small glow in the dark bead. Looks like a glowing eye down there :) Way less snags on the single.

Buzz bomb made special single hooks for their lures. I think they were called zzingle hooks. They were like an octopus hook, but the eye was bent 90 degrees to the shank. I don't know if they still make them or not.

Sorry, like Rockfish just said.
