Burnewiin downrigger rail mounts

Has anyone done a burnewiin downrigger rail mount? They look reasonable in price, compared to a scotty swivel and rail mount, and will really lower my stack height and be much quicker to remove and install.

If someone is running the Burnewinn gunwale mount, how do you like it for your Scotties? Did you ditch the Scotty swivel mount?

Haven't used the rail mount, just the gunnel version. In my opinion, you still need the Scotty (or a Njord) swivel mount. I don’t think it is practical to try and rotate the downrigger using the Burnewiin mount without taking the ball right out of the water and placing into a ball holder, way too much leverage.

If you were to go with the vertical mount for your downrigger, I would mount bolted to a vertical surface. Pretty sure they would spin no matter what if mounted on a round railing when using a downrigger.

Thanks! I’m installing the Scotty ball retrievers this weekend to see if I can eliminate one of the main reasons I rotate. I do have a vertical mount, but I would like to reinforce the rails and maybe add a third downrigger in the middle, but I’m still 2 years behind on projects!

I purchased a pre-owned boat and it came loaded with Burnewiin gunnel mounts. I ‘ll admit I probably wouldn’t have bothered if I had bought new but after having them on two boats now, they are indeed handy for mounting both DR’s and stand-alone sonar modules

Yes, if you plan on mounting a SCotty, definitely stick with the swivel mount. It’s not so easy-peasey to either lift the DR into an alternate position or even remove it. My mounts are 3 seasons old and have become a bit “sticky”—-you’ll want something big and solid to grip when you’re removing the DR ….I’m sometimes spooked the DR will slip out of my hand when pulling it free due to that stickiness

And definitely belly up to the bar for a proper Burnewiin mounting plate for the SCotty or whatever DR you’re using to bolt to the top of the bayonet part of the mount. I cheaped-out and tried a marine plywood mount—-it exploded when I hung a rock ledge and I almost lost my HP —-only the plug saved me

I use the burnwins for my bbq with the huge standoff mount for less mess and burnt arms, my trap puller for easy removal and my fillet table for a super strong single offset mounting position. They work perfectly for all of those applications. I wouldn't use them for my riggers at all. Lot's if cheaper and easier mounts for those.
