Bunk Slide Material

Looking to re-do my trailer bunks.

Bunks are 2x6, and wondering if I should buy slides (there are a bunch on Amazon - but none stand out as amazing), or just use bulk UHMW, secure with stainless screws so they don't touch the hull (aluminum), and then seal with silicon. How many sliders should I have, and what's the recommended size? The bunk is between 8-10ft - haven't measured it up yet.

Anyone come across a really skookum setup they want to recommend?

i used raw yellow cedar and countersunk the stainless hardware, capped with silicone. lasted longer than most of the metal on the pos trailer.

Interesting - I was wondering about Cedar - but my experience in construction leads me to be cautious. Cedar (and some other woods) have tannins which are highly reactive. This primarily targets steel (reason why hot dipped/stainless/ACQ fasterners are recommended) - but cedar does also react with aluminum. My thinking was good old KD douglas fir with penetrating oil + waxed ends. If I use UHMV slides, that would lift the hull off the wood, so it could dry out properly after each use.

never thought of it as my alu boat was bottom painted every season and never showed any sign of corrosion where the bunk strips made contact.

highliner trailers in delta will sell you the correct slides pre cut to fit your bunks. take your trailer over and they will install for you as well.
