Has anyone been out at Browns bay and area this past weekend? Have the Chum started showing up yet?

They are there--- 60,000 were taken in the first commercial opening in the Striats. And they are starting to show in east coast van Is. rivers.

I might give it a try on Friday-- if so I will post a report

There's plenty of fishing comming through, no lie there. However there doesn't seem to be too many being caught by anglers unless the weather gets nice. On sunny days a few get caught on the rainy days...not many comming back in boats.

I was up on Sunday. It was very slow. Most boats didn't catch anything, and those that knew what they were doing only got one or two in the box and lost about the same. From what I have seen the fish are coming in waves - here today and not too many the next day. It is still a bit early, so hopefully there is a larger wave of fish coming.

Thanks for the information. It should just get better from now to sometime in eary November. I will be going up there this weekend to give it a try I will post the results next week.

Was really hoping to get up to Browns for my first trip (ever) tomorrow but the weather does not look glorious. NW 15-25 in late morning building to NW 30 in the afternoon. I've heard the NW is the worst for Browns but ??? Maybe Greenseas is out but can a guy still fish Deepwater or Plumper?
Thanks

It seems like its ALWAYS blowing one way or another off Browns bay.

But, yes, you can tuck in at Plunper when its snotty in the Straits

Spent the am up there today until the NW got nasty. Spent most of the am at Deepwater with 4 commercial boats and a fleet of whalers. We had one hook-up, one small coho and one small ling. Didn't see a lot landed but it was starting to pick up as the wind got mean. Marked lots of fish. Was my first time and I'll be back!

Rbf, I find that it is better fishing there on a SE wind vice a NW wind. Its alot calmer. That being said, its better on a calm day, with no wind. lol. Chums also seem to bite on a clear, bright day much better then a cloudy, rainy day, in the Browns Bay, Green Sea area Tight Lines,........BB

Cheers BB,
I agree, calm is best and a SW is way better than the NW but I couldn't complain with the three or four hours of light NW we got before it blew up. We actually had quite a bit of sun for a while and as you said, that is when the bite seemed to turn on. This is new to me and I've got a LOT to learn!
Cheers

RBF, what time of the day did things start to pickup? I am heading up to Browns this weekend to give it a try myself. It sounds like there are some around. Where other boats getting anthing?

Low tide was at -730 yesterday. There seemed to be more activity around around 10 or 11 than earlier. Of course, the wind picked up and we were blown off after 11. We fished Deepwater mainly due to the wind but the talk on the radio was that Greenseas was more productive the day before. There were a lot of OBMG boats and a few other sporties around and there seemed to be the odd fish picked up but certainly not lights out. Given it was my first trip there I have little to reference, but I would say that there were lots of fish around and there were certainly jumpers.

Good luck! Wish I was heading up!

Not much chit chat on the chum fishing yet...heading up Saturday to give it a whirl, anyone got any advice for a chum virgin? We'll be armed with the popular items such as pink/black and pink/blue squirts and a couple dozen Lucky.

On another site i read its decent not really gangbusters yet. 5-8 fish a morning. Pretty easy fishery just throw down 4 rods with those hootchies/blue,purple flashers anywhere from 90-20 feet and troll around slowly. Plumpers and greenwater seem to be best youll see the crowds.

Doesn't sound like the fish up there warrants me spending $ for the derby.
I'm going to stay home and lake fish instead. That way I KNOW I'll be catching fish.
Oh well, there's always next year. :)

When I first heard of the derby I thought I'd be fishing Springs and Coho.
Not into Chum. Gave my tickets to some guy at work, says he might go if nothing better to do.He don't really like Chum fishing either.

Kelly is right methinks........ And I think its a good idea for your friend to skip the Derby if it is soooo much trouble for him to do something he doesnt like. Leaves room for someone who has tried, and understands, that chums are fantastic sportsfish in the salt.

Ooops There I go giving away secrets again :D
