Braided vs. stainless for downrigger.

I tune in my speed with the "singing". It ain't broke so I ain't fixing it.[:p]

Take only what you need.

aaah , blowback. Thats what you call it. Yeah , and it does suck! I have gotten so used to what angle and sound my steel cable needs to be at. I think If I make the transition to braid there might be a confidence thing the first few trips out.

Hey what about the braided getting all fuzzed up with time. Does this happen? and if it does how about when going through the big schools of jellies. Steel cleans quite easily. How about the braid?

We switched to braided at our lodge last season and lost way fewer cannon balls. I didn't loose any, and I think between about 5 of us only 1 or 2 broke off, and it was never just ware and tear, always a specail circumstance like the brake failing then a guest hitting the button while the ball is dropping fast. We just ended up putting 2 or 3 stoppers on to stop sliding - worked fine. Also, we had the scotty stuff and the blowback sucked, so a few of us got some no-name braid at the shop. I think it was 100lb and was quite thin. No break offs and definitely dropped straiter than cable. It doesn't take long to adjust to the different angle. O and also I used snubbers to cuision the stress on the line, but not all the guides did.

So, Luna, I take it that the extra 3lbs did not help? Went to Redden Net just a little while ago and got 300' of PP in 200 lb test , got a great price. They gave me a large swivile (sp) , so I am just going to use it to connect the cable to the braid, and give that a try. Going to stick with the 12lbers. Thanks for the replies,..........BB

Well for once I hate to say i agree with fish assasin on this one.

SS wire has been around forever and I do quite well with it so ill stick with it ill admit tried it once(braided) when I didnt know better and it sucked so ill never go back. one thing with wire if your lazy and dont look after it and watch for kinks bad crimps etc and you loose cannon balls its not the wires fault it operator error.
Best thing I have ever done is invest in proper crimping pliers saves time and money had a cannon ball for 5 years till the eye finally pulled out of it not bad, just like everything on a boat matenance is what makes stuff last.

Good luck WOLF

Braid all the way. Used wire for last 14 years. Best move I made switching to braid. No more cannon balls gone, will last forever, no more nicks in my hands, easy to tie, smooth, quite, so many positives. Only negative is with downrigger clips and beads sometimes slip. You need to double up on the beads and then you should be good. Use crazy glue if needs to make them stick in the spot you want. Long live Braid.

Braid for me all the way............on lot depends if your a 'dragger' or a 'planner', I'm a dragger and I know SS sucks if you drag abit too often (i.e too many break off). I have a blackbox, never found it to do too much but my 'voltage' was always in the 'range'. I have a buddy (good fisherman) who swears he had a issue (poor battery grounding) until it was resolved. Anyways braid as those have already said will eliminate this issue...........no going back for me.
