Braided vs. stainless for downrigger.

I think I saw it advertised in the Island Fisherman's latest magazine.
I think it's Scotty anyways.

LET GO OF THE REEL!!!

My buddies are grilling me on even contemplating this crap. Like they say, if it aint broke.........

Guess I have had a little too much time to think about this stuff lately. Actually it's all fun experimenting.

never go back after using braid...

Braid is the way, whatever you do don't buy the scotty braid, the blow back on it is rediculous. It can make winter spring fishing very frustrating when you have 200ft of cable out to hit bottom in 130ft. No rusting, easy to handle if you need to, won't wrap and snarl on you, no crimps. First day I had braid a boat came out of the fog at Secretary and had his fish was wrapped around my rigger. I Popped my gear, brought up the rigger, netted his 25lb'er and handed him his fish. I would never imagine doing that with wire, lol!

Hi Everyone. I'm newer to the site, and this is my first post. I just finished a 5 day trip to Nootka using 175 scotty spectra braided. I like it for all the known positive reasons, BUT I did find some negatives. The things that will prevent me from using it further are...stacker clips slide and disappear easily, the red bead doesn't always stay in place, and therefore we lost a couple of balls [V] from the line breaking at the knot. My thought is... while spectra is incredibly strong, it gets weaker at the knot; and an electric scotty's torque doesn't help matters any.

Before you switch back, do a search on here as there is a ton of discussion about braid, how to keep red clips/stoppers in places and a special knot for stacking.

I personally have no problem with the red clips and they work fine without the glue and such.

The search button on here is in the upper right corner.

Cheers

Hey Wake N Bait, there are some ways to prevent the red stoppers from popping off. I know some of the guys glue and some use swivels (and there upteen different methods that have been discussed on here). I've tried most of them and I like to weave an additional piece of the braid through the stopper and tie with a couple of granny knots at both ends. The stoppers haven't moved since...and I can move relatively easily if need be.

quote: I wouldn't think it would be any more prone to catching the prop than any other material ( stainless) would it? Or are we talking about the aftermath should it happen.

It's the aftermath I speak of. I use Scotty line and I will gladly say it seems to work perfectly fine. Sure it took some time to the game going but once I worked everything out everything is just fine.
I have not tried the new Scotty line but I will say I am going to buy the same old stuff I bought last year from Scotty. At 200ft with a 13lb Gibbs pancake weight I am within 10ft of true. That is close enough for me.

Powerpro (inovative textiles) has been bought out by Shimano now, not overly sure what i think of that, however the P pro 200# has served me well for the last three years, even cathes the odd good fish:D I dont think i would go back to cable, may have a peak at the 175# Scotty next, rather than go the Shimano route. I still have wire on my third rigger out the back for now, until it rots out.

Lots of posts already done on rigging etc on here over the years. Don't give those slabs to much credit;)

I have been interested in replacing my wire for braid, and a few months ago called Scotty to see who had the new 175# product shown in their online catalog, but at the time not found in the stores. During this conversation, the Scotty rep brought up the advantages of braids etc, but specifically said some users have had the DR spool break/crack from the an unnamed brand of braid being wound over tight on the DR spool. He suggested if that happens while using the other brand braid, it would not be covered by Scotty warranty.

So in my case, I found the 175#, probably spend a few more bucks than if I bought PP, but I am supposedly covered if that happens. I dont think the Scotty guy was messing with me since they enjoy such a good warranty, but it cause one to consider more than the price per foot.

Thanks for all the input guys!
