Braided DR line for dummies!

Hello braided users.

My ss DR line is finally ruined. Everytime I peel off the nicked part I find more. It served well for at least 5 years.

I have been reading great things about braided DR line and have searched the forums - there is just too much info and too little time to sort through it!

Will someone please reply to this post with a lesson for 'dummies' like me, keep it simple please ;)
I don't want any surprises like the trigger things sliding on the line, and I don't want the line to 'blowback' more than the ss did.
Where can you get a good deal in Nanaimo?

Thanks so much.

You should sell GLG that used dr cable.

Seriously though, ive been using the braided line for two seasons now and I can hardly say anything bad about it... it might have a little bit more drag than cable. Appearantly there is newer thinner stuff on the market now.
ITs expensive and I done know of anywhere thats cheaper than the other... especially in Nanaimo.

I have switched to nylon line and am pretty happy with it. If you have a problem with it, just tie a new knot and good to go...no more crimps.

I used 150lb powerpro to minimize blowback. It has broken twice, when the autostop bead slipped and the ball/snubber hit the downrigger retrieve hard. That might have broken with any line. But otherwise, no problems.

I first put on scotty's strongest line, can't remember if 200 lb or 300lb test. It worked fine when fishing 30-80', but found it had too much drag for fishing deep (150-200'). So I switched to the thinner stuff. Will sell the scotty line for half price of new...used about 10 times.

People on here have all sorts of systems for stacking lines, using knots or superglue. I bought the Scotty Stacker release clips, works fine.

I had my power pro snap a couple of times when my auto stop slipped and the line was jammed at the pulley. After that I put in 6-8' of experienced SS line joined with a swivel. No problems after that and the snap stays put as well. I hear that there is at least one good source of experienced fishing products around

I ran the Power Pro this season, 200lb test. I had no problem off Victoria, HOWEVER, when I was dragging 15 pounders through the swell at 5knts off Renfrew, the stuff just didn't hold up. The Scotty 250 pound stuff I have _NEVER_ had a failure, and I regularily fish up to 200 feet. When using 15 pound balls, I don't get that much more blowback, but I also use a braided mailine which may provide less drag on the release clip as well, allowing the ball to go deeper.

Kelly: When you say didn't hold up, I assume you meant it snapped? That's an expensive problem!

15 pound balls, eh? That would sink that thicker line a bit better. I wonder if my poor old scottys could handle that much weight?

Sorry about the screw up replies I had, computer messed up (not me).

I have been running SS on one DR and 150lb power pro braid on the other. I have not noticed any difference in one catching more fish than the other. The blow back is much less on the braid than the SS. I have had a few problems with the braid, mostly my own doing. First, do not use the fisherman's knot to connect the braid to the terminal gear as it will slip ($35 on the bottom). Use the palomar knot instead. I have also lost a few cannonballs in mysterious circumstances which I would attribute to abrasions or nicks on the braid. You may also run into slippage or breaking of the plastic stoppers they use on the braid. IMO the SS is bullet proof but the braid is nicer to fish with.

POWER PRO all the way

and Ganyon line and a swivel ( swivels wont slide )

I will never use anything but

thanks RS best addition to MY boat ever

X2 - I use just 130lb braid to a 20' section of cod line. The swivel acts as the stopper and the cod line is easy on the hand when you grab it.

Juandesooka, I'm thinking you had a bad fray or bad nots - no way your scotty is putting 150lbs of direct force on that line to cause it break?

My breaks happened when snubber hit the downrigger arm and it just kept pulling unnoticed, while I was dealing with other stuff.

Could be bad knots...though I use standard palomar. Is there a stronger recommendation?

Could be fray...I notice the bottom foot or two gets minor abrasions after a few trips, so a good idea to cut off bottom foot or two and re-tie every once in a while.

It would be interesting to know what the pulling strength of downriggers is. Best I could find in quick search was this, which doesn't really answer the question:

Hook your clip onto a scale and let er fly! That will give you your answer. I'd be curious to know as well. Maybe tie your scale to something secure though and have something inline to absorb shock - a couple parallel snubbers perhaps. If I get a chance I'll give it a try and pass on the results.

Okay...thanks for the help but still confused!

I have an 8 pack of Lucky with your name on it at the derby if you can tell me what to do and where to buy it (braid that is).
As long as I use it and it works!
I wasn't kidding when I wanted a recipe for dummies!:D

Thanks.

here's a suggestion...

1)go to nearest tackle shop and get a roll of 150lb power pro

2)after taking the wire off, wind as much braid as you need (250-350')
on to one rigger.

3)With a palomar knot, tie on a crane swivel and trim the end.
(swivel acts as a shutoff stop)

4)To the other end of the swivel, tie a 3-4' piece of 100lb ganyon

5)to the end of the ganyon , tie your plastic ball clip.

you're ready to go, and if you like the system, it's time to convert your other rigger !

Sometimes the line gets crossed @ the top of the knot when tying a Palomar, don't know any other way to explain in one dimension like this, it will weaken the knot.

I like the Uni knot tied with a doubled line wrap it four times it'll never break. ;)

RS Craven: what should I do for stopper markers (the old ones that are yellow and black)?

Thanks.
