Braid—-the Upside and the Downside

The dreaded weed check. Although most of the weeds are on the line between the rod and the clip. They only hit your gear after you pop the clip. Jelly fish were thick inshore last week.

ok i’ve been staying out of this but i can’t takes no more haha.
worried about weeds on your line? jig.
worried about fishing around other idiots that aren’t paying attention? jig.
worried about wrapping around your thru hull transducer? jig.
gotta raft tied up to one side? jig off the other side!
i use 30 lb depth hunter braid which is approx diameter of 8 lb test mono. my rod is 6’3”
often springs wanna sulk under my boat with jigging. the short rod allows you to torque the spring out from under the boat.

all kidding aside, i know it’s different with some of your epic trips up the bc coast where you are targeting certain rock outcroppings where you might not want to be stationary. jigging can get tiresome as well, even with gram weighted jigs

I dare you to go jig at camper creek in the middle of all the boats trolling and mooching, I like jigging for salmon, just not an option really with all the boats trolling

I definitely thought about it, but worried what my boat might look like at the marina the next morning haha

you would never find me fishing in such a gong show in the first place. it’s an interesting mindset actually. around here the trollers have learned the jiggers have found bait so they move in on us. in all my years i’ve only had one person ( a guide with clients all with long faces ) say anything to me. he claimed i was on his tack and i burst out laughing as i released a mid 20 spring in front of his guests.
my point is that jigging is just so much easier. it eliminates so many issues mentioned in this thread. but i don’t find it as effective in shallower water such as one encounters along the beaches of the west coast or other tighter spots such as otter or camper

Jigging is great when it is, and isn't when it isn't.

I’ve had really good days jigging 30-50 feet , my wife is addicted to jigging for salmon, she had an epic day with multiple big fish in short order off of seabird island fishing 30-50 feet deep, but with the crowds trolling it’s hard to replicate that day

Ya well like I said I get out of dodge first, then go to neutral, when fishing surrounded by the guides, it’s easy, everybody knows the gig, it’s the googan show on the beach that’s a bit stupid

want to fish salmon and bottom fish but don't have time to move spots and switch gear? jig.

I would agree that most guide operations are respectful of the fact that this is a shared public resource. They play nice with non guided boat
There are exceptions however. Best example of bad etiquette is the Bremner gongshow.
I'm sure there are others.

Ha ha… well played…. But jigging seems to be a young man’s sport…. Me? I’m as old as dirt and back in my jigging days I’d go and pound for 12 —16 hour days, day after day after day—in between salmon, dogfish and sole, I jigged my self into residency in the hurt locker with major bursitis in my forearm… like so bad I couldn’t function… it looked like someone had sutured a baseball under the skin of my arm…so I’ll admit, the Scotty thing allows me to keep doing the 12 —16 hour day stuff but without the type of beat/down jigging did to my body.. …
I’ll probably keep doing what I do but will remove that thru-hull and go flush mount after this season…too much risk getting braid in the props when a fish wraps it
All the guys who stay in gear when hooked up… I tried that this morning on a fish and it just ain’t my thing, especially around other boats when the wind is blowing….i was in a fleet of at least 60 boats, every one them on a different tack…. Gong show supreme

And just conjecture here but I suspect the guys who fish flashers have better results staying in gear because the flasher helps lead the fish (??)
I fish with just a swivel and a hook; always have… and typically I get huge amounts of line out on a fish…and that’s not by choice or going easy on the drag…I think it’s part of the territory when they don’t have a chunk of plastic dragging behind them… again, just conjecture but my experience is most fish take off like raped apes and sometimes they end up under the boat, most of the time they don’t
Braid just makes it a bit more sketchy when they do
