Brad’s Killer Baits

Only two mentions of this lure type on the site. Brad’s makes a number of models with similar names. An early model Brad’s Killer Lure (or similar name) opened up so you could pack in a bait scent pad. Some people pack with tuna fish. Popular with the Buoy 10 fisherman and at one time popular in Nanaimo and Rupert.

Friend asked about it recently.

Does anybody use these lures? And, do they work around the Fraser mouth?

I've caught lots of fish on those, everywhere. We call them the "meat lockers" , I like the black backed ones with a piece of herring or chovy stuffed in them. Fished like a cut plug. Dummy flasher sometimes. They've got a nice roll!

I use the brads cut plugs. Some years it dominated, not this year though. Always worth a few tries.

I've tried the smaller size for Kokanee in the interior a couple times. Didn't catch any. Haven't tried the larger size in the salt. I think they are more popular in the States.

A totally American thing. Even when ya know your gonna catch fish ,they think its a real advantage.......... just makes ya stink like cat food. Its a gimmick. Scent for hali and sturgon is for real but salmon, I'll pass on.

I've caught fish on them. On the colour called Blackjack. Basically natural colour. But when I bought my own I never really sued them. I always forget to make up bait. So don't use them. They should work awesome.
They aren't cheap though.
I've used a Spin'nFish as well. They worked too. Same concept, different shape.

I have a bunch of them... fished them a few times... never caught jack squat with them so now they sit at home in my overflow tackle box. I bet they would do ok if you took anchovy strip and replaced the sponge with real strip, but I think the key to success is fishing them like a cut plug which is slow. The waters around Nanaimo are not conducive to slow.

I have heard they were used to great effect up on the Thompson. Just as in the Columbia down south. Bait is the question. Canned tuna is normal, and standard bait. Legal? Maybe. It is fish, but it's processed and not raw.

They might be more effective in river systems where the fish are past the feeding stage and strike more out of agrivation at a bright colored snappy action lure. A real cutplug herring trolled slow can be super effective in salt but not at all times, sometimes trolling fast is the ticket.

I use them all the time. I rig them with 5 beads so the hook sits further back. I pack them with the foam and sent. You can fish them fast. They work well on days with murky water. The trick is, clean them well after use. I dont think salmon like spoiled meat. Anchovies are still obviously the go to.
