Wondering if anyone could recommend a good place to get my Malibu 185 bottom painted for mooring this summer. I live in Langford so something lower island would work well. Are there different options or is there pretty much just one way to go.
It may not "apply" to you but i was told an interesting story last summer about a sailboater who believes he has developed an additive to anti fouling paint. He claimed that he had mixed powdered Jalapeno peppers with his bottom paint and had way less barnacle growth (nearly none).
Sounds odd but stranger things have happened.
If you have a trailer I wouldn't paint it. I haul my 22 Seasport onto the ramp once a month (preferably on a windy afternoon when the ramp is quiet any way) and spray bleach on the green growth. It dissolves away and by the time you get back to where you started it is gone. All that is left is a quick rinse. If you take it out every 4 weeks you won't get barnacles. Once you paint the hull it becomes an annual expense and not that cheap compared to a couple bottles of bleach. The heaviest growth occurs in June and July, the later summer is 1/4 of the growth.
I didn't think that it was something that was needed annually actually so I have to consider that. I don't like the staining where it sits under the water line and had a really hard time taking most of it off when I pulled the boat. I am going to have to see what the costs are and weigh my options I guess. Thanks for the replies, I am going to consider my options.
There are cleaners that take the staining off really easy. Wipe on and rinse. Keeping it well polished and waxed is the secret to minimizing its return.
