bleeding hydraulic steering

2 interesting videos I used a clear bottle so I could see the level and air fittings so I could disconnect and fluid did not leak. 1 man operation!

Just buy one of these, hook to your seastar. Then using a tripod hook up a jug of hydraulic fluid. Put hose onto helm pump and turn back and forth until all bubbles out (make sure you have opened both bleeder valves on the cylinder ! ....far easier and u can do it solo. I just installed a new seastar and a complete newbe to hydraulic steering and tried the above and OTHER methods and it was chaos. The way I noted above with this unit was by far the easiest and effective for me IMHO

So you didn’t use the return line? Did you just crack the helm to remove the air? I have a minor leak at my helm so pretty sure I’ll be doing this in the near future . B2BE2770-ABBA-4F22-89F8-A1325F8AB031.jpeg

yes you have to open the helm plug to attach the line from your hydraulic supply (qt jug on the tripod) which if there is air in the helm it will float up the tub and escape threw the jug (once you started turning and purging the system. No need for a return line because the system will purge the bubbles when you turn the steering wheel one way for about 30 turns or until it stops then the other (oh forgot you have to open both bleeders as well when you put the tub on) way. This is the reason for having the above tub on it circulates the system moving the bubbles to the pump and then out the pump up the line attached from pump to new hydralic supply in qt jug. Keep doing it until all the bubbles have ended . works great !
No slippage at all and way cleaner lol

You get the kit on Amazon? If so you have a link ?

Buy a 1/4 npt x 5/16 brass hose barb, some clear tubing and a 1 liter oil bottle. Hang bottle above filler with no low spots in tubing, put a small hole into bottom of oil jig with a thumb tack that can be replaced to reseal.
cost, less than $10

I think Steveston Hdw in Richmond might have the hook up your looking for, some guys just make there own , get the couplers tube from Home Hardware (just need to research what size nipples on your cylinder) , if you can find them made. Or , ask Ship Happens , he'd probably make u one !

Was there yesterday and can confirm they don’t have any.

Darn, should be easy to make I would think if you went to a hydralic shop and just got the connectors and then the tube from Home Depo ( I know they have the Tube and probable have the quick connects as well) ask Ship Happens I am sure he knows the sizes you need !
