black cod or sable fish

I've been going out prawning the last few days a few miles from Kitimat. Today I caught in my prawn trap what I thought was a small cod but it looked a bit different from the other cod I caught over the years. I let it go as I didn't need any bait. Long story short I went to the local Legion for a beer and a newfie buddy of mine told me that this is the time of year that the black cod run up this way from Alaska in the Winter and they are great eating. Now I don't mind being suckered in by my Newf buddy once in awhile but I thought I'd check out with you guys to see if there is any truth to this.

I was told the same by a local from Prince Rupert. I know him well and I don't believe he was kidding me.[8D]

smoked black cod is also called butterfish its great and the oil is supposedly good for you. they livevery deep and are probably coming up a little shallower at this timeof year especially the small ones.sometimes you can catchthem off race rocks when trolling for salmon.also called skilfish

Ever seen the episides of Deadliest Catch when Sig modifies his crab pots to catch Pacific Cod? Well, one of the ways they catch sablefish in BC is in pots so no big surprise that one would get into a prawn trap.

I've smoked sablefish (black cod) several times. It is the best,I'd take it over smoked salmon any day. Hard to get a hold of these days though. Used to be lots in the straight in the old days, like a lot of species, now rarely seen.

Has anyone caught those grey cods? And are they as good to eat?

Take only what you need.

We caught some grey cod out near Swiftsure Bank while fishing for halibut a few years ago. They were excellent eating. All around 10 to 15 lbs.

Love the fish!

I had a chef at a seafood restaurant down in Vancouver explain (she may be full of it) that Sablefish is the name of the fish but when it is smoked they call it by the name "Black Cod". Generally on menus you will see it referred to as "Smoked Alaskan Black Cod".

Not sure the validity to it but from my undestanding they are the same fish.[?]

Black cod...I agree, excellent smoked. Chanced upon that in experimenting after a swiftsure trip, smoking black cod, halibut, spring salmon, coho. The black cod blew me away how good it was.

Grey cod...probably like other cod, decent white fish. I think it is pretty bony, not a lot meat compared to body size. Fishing with a buddy on a semi-charter a few years ago, with some friends of mine. We were catching dogfish, grey cod, and chicken halibut pretty much evenly. When we brought up a grey cod, he'd throw it back, telling my friends "you can't eat those, the meat is poisonous". He told me after he says that just because he doesn't want to have to clean them!

;)

I went out again today, no cod, got about 70 prawns though. Thanks for the replies. If I get another one of those in the traps I'll give it a try..
