Big Hali

Spot on DUDS

They've had to resort to that on the Pelagic species. Pics are worth a thousand words. If those halis could only simmer down at the side of the boat to recover those expensive rigs hey.

"Put it into perspective would you want to date a nice 20 year old hot, hard body woman " I'm getting as many halibut interested in my bait as interested looks from the 20 year old hard bodies! (That'd be none!) T2

I've been lucky enough to catch a few over 100lbs.in local waters, and I can tell you there,s nothing wrong with the meat, just bigger flakes. As far as releasing is concerned,I've tried, with no success as they invariably inhale the hooks or flail at the side of the boat until they start bleeding.I don't think they stand much of chance of survival with hooks left in them.Besides, we have adrenaline and testosterone running through us on these rare occasions, and thats what fishing is all about.Sorry if I offend some of you politically correct types, believe me,I hope this great halibut fishery so close to home lasts forever!

I have a photo of reel addictios hawg. how do I post a photo ? doesn't seem to want to let me copy and paste

I disagree, it's only a matter of cutting off the hook, even if it's
left in it's mouth.
Those fish often last hours, after being harpooned, bonked and hogtied.
Cutting the leader and leaving a hook in it's mouth is not going to kill it.

They will survive saw a pic of one up in lagoon cove that a guy caught and it had hardware on it old lures and hooks they are a very tough fish .

Good job by the way steve very impressed good to see someone who "works" at it get a quality fish!!!!

Hey Steve I will trade you co-ordinates....I find the smaller hali's....Could work out a trade for a spot for that big moose you want:)

First off nice fish Steve.Dont for a second feel bad for killing it were allowed to thats why there is a limit, that one fish isn't going to mean the end of all halli.

Thats why were out there were all fishing for the big one and if you say your not your lying.I've let big hogs like that go in the north island but i wouldn't even think about it down here.

Wolfy i've seen you come in with fish over a hundred and you weren't on a charter unless Paul Taylor is a client?

Try pulling hooks out of a 150lb + fish and your asking for a hook in your hand i've seen it more than a couple times.

Again Sweet fish Steve!

Would have loved to see the look on those guys faces!!!! Good on ya.
Bet ya they'll be back

YES ben there done it times have changed though!!!!!!I personally dont want them look at what I said TREV before you snap at me!!!!!

Having caught and released a couple in the double century class...it isn't that hard...and I felt a lot better than had I killed those big breeders, for what? Oh yeah...mercury poisoning....

im having some of that monster right now steve thankyou and your clients for the generous piece. mozzarella cheese on top with garlic butter. baked at 500 in oven 10 minutes

Hey guys thanks for all the praise, im just out there doing what i love to do, 2 big fish in a week, that horse shoe is really shining!LOL
Jack just buy my bertram and it will lead you to the fish!LOL

There is no conservation issue with Halibut, Bonk away! Its really easy to sit back and say what you would do in the situation, I know I'd stick the shark hook in it and hold on tight.

Love to see a pic and how about a hint, west or east?

First off good job Steve, your the hali king. I posted the information on here thinking others could enjoy the excitment of this once in a liftime opportunity to get one so close to 200 in Victoria/Sooke area on sporty gear. It's to bad some of the responses were not so positive.

Steve, lets go to your spot, i have new batteries in my handheld gps..Did you lose Luna last night?

I find it unfortunate that comments like mine may be seen as “negative” by some of the forum participants.

About 9 years ago, after fishing for salmon for several years, I decided to try fishing for halibut. I asked several experienced people where/how to catch them, etc. I was surprised when most of them -from fishing guides to weekenders, from Port Hardy to Bamfield- advised me to release (if possible)the big ones, as they are not good eating and most are breeding females. That made total sense to me. Then, I saw in this forum a totally different view (bonk! bonk! bonk!!! ), and this is why I posted: "I have wondered for many years what could be the rationale for catching and keeping those big fish, which are supposed to be breeding females that lay several million eggs a year (besides of their meat being tough and wormy on most instances)."

Clearly, there is nothing illegal in catching and bonking an extremely large hali. I just wanted to know what drives some people to do it while many others encourage their release.
