Best Type of Kicker Motor

Thanks for all the info and replies guys. By what has been said so far a high thrust Yammy 9.9 is a good way to go.

To answer your question Teamchachi my boat was doing about 3-4 mph with the 8hp kicker at full throttle going gross current to the tide and wind. The hull speed estimator seems to be set up for sailboats which all have displacement hulls, nut planing hulls. I don't know if this will make much difference.

Using a very general hull speed formula, hull speed on a 23 foot boat should come in around 6.5 knots.(http://www.sailingusa.info/cal__hull_speed.htm

That is as fast as you could ever hope to go on a kicker. How fast will the 8 horse kicker get you going right now? 4 knots? 5 knots?

It would actually be less, hull speed is based on the actual part of the boat in the water, with a 23' boat how much of the bow is above the water line, 4, 5 feet?
