best rod for downrigging/mooching

Trophywife I purchased 2 of the fetha styx down rigger rods (10''6) you were talking about and paired them with trophy QR reels. I fished once last week and the rods seemed great..Lots of play yet still have the back bone. Only place to get them on the island is Harbour chandler in Nanaimo $199ea. I got Dane there to order me in 2 but he is going to stock them now. I think there is a dealer in Coquitlam but i don't believe they stock this model. The handle is carbon fibre as far as I know. After looking at them closely these rods seem to be made to last. The reel seat is sturdy and well designed and there are 15 eyelets on the rod ( for what its worth).

One thing different about them is the butt of the rod is a fair bit longer than most mooching rods but I didn't notice it much when I was fishing it last week.

I was thinking of going carbon fibre handles for the lamiglas 1064 but too worried a guest will let it slip when its raining out and bye bye rod and islander...

honestly think cork or duplon/foam are the best bet for rear rod handles

how much friction/grip is there going on with handle and the rod holder cork foam vs carbon / plastic ????
and the amount of jogging around going on when your running or on choppy sea's
i like also and putting on most of my rods is is a gimbal butt and removable rubber cap

as you can put in the holder and no twisting is going to happen but personal preference

Techniums were my favs. Used Reddel glass rods at the lodge last summer and they were fine but, tips blew when the chows negleted to stop reeling in. Taloras are another consideration.
Got a new sponsor (Amundson) this season and looking forward to this new design.
Keep you posted.

I agree with many on this thread that Shimano Techniums are a solid rod and for my money they are the best value. During boatshow time you can usually pick them up on sale for a reel good price. I have the regular convergence rods as well and I use them more often regularly but when it's time to replace them I'll go with all Techniums I think. I've never been a big fan of spending a ton on a rod (sage, etc) and prefer to spend on reels (islanders) so for my Techniums are the most pricey I'm willing to buy, and I think during sale time you can get one for around $150 or so.

The carbon fibre of the fetha styx has a texture that gives them grip...Being a guide tho is a whole nother thing. As me and my freinds and family are the ones using them its not a big deal and trust whoever is using them. If I have a beginner I have a backup HMX with a 4000gt they can use.

I picked up a technium 10'6" with a new lower end for $50! Had a repair to one guide on the upper section that wasn't perfect but looks like it will hold. Looking forward to seeing how it compares to my Shimano TDR's that I have been using the past 2 years. Seems like folks like em.

So i am a lil confuse.... Are the fetha styx not a custom blank? Or do they also sell a made in china version that is comparable and possibly better than a shimano?

They do have a custom shop...But the down rigger rod is a production run, now where they are produced I am not sure, I don't think they are made over seas.. I would call Nick at fetha styx he can explain it better. The attention to detail of the reel seat and butt end is what set it apart for me from the technium. Now it looks like it is built to last and it says it is, but only time will tell as there isn't much to go on as the rod isn't very old as in terms of years of production. I just fell in love with the the down rigger rod and had to have it.

The 10'6 is the way to go with the Fetha Styx, the 9'6 and 9'0 feel a little too much on the stiff side. The 10'6 has lots of play, lots of backbone. Just go into Harbour Chandler I believe they still have one 10'6 rod left...If not they said they would be ordering more in.

I used to use the Shimano Convergence but had 3 of them end up like this.

It's a shame because I like the action on them better than the Shimano Technium's I'm running now. Those Technium's are built pretty bomb proof.

My buddies run Sage customs and they are sweet. Here is a shot of my buddy with one he build a long time ago with an old tiny Ambassadeur mooching reel.

(He landed a nice 34 lber after that shot was taken).

I really like cork handles and my salmon and trout rods. I don't mind foam for hali rod's etc..

The guy in the top picture has Lamiglass rod's and I have fished them on his boat. I think they are really nice rod's for the money. I hear you can go to the factory in Woodland Washington on a certain day and buy factory seconds for 50% off.

I'd buy whatever has the best warranty and is avail at te closest tackle shop to you and has lots of same rods at any time so you can exchange for new one very easily when one breaks on u!

You Know what i love about this forum ?? I like digging up the oldies .. whats everybodies favorite choice for downrigger rods these day , after slipping in the boat this summer and deepsixin one of my okuma rods Derby lent me a Rapala classic moocher and i really enjoyed fishing it and i liked the larger cork handles.. i want to know everyones favorite rods for trolling.

I'll sound like a broken wheel here but the old school Titan 3106 is my favorite. Never tried a sage but apparently they're the same.

Technium for quality of playing fish, enough spine to pull up a big spring but also fun to play a coho too.

Kufa for value, esp when you have idiot guests on the boat

I have enjoyed the few fish I’ve caught on my Technium. Tryed and have a few others of the lower price points but here’s a few probably priced in order of quality.

I don't own them but the TFO mooching rods I've used on a buddies boat have been great.

I have a set of medium heavy convergence rods that seem to be unbreakable and I've also had good luck with hmx rods.

The pair of Titans Trophy xls or whatever they're called have a nice feel when they're not randomly snapping in half.

I think I would by a set of the TFOs next time around but I haven't found a lower mainland dealer as of yet.

I’m sure you’ve checked Highwater already, but I thought they were a TFO dealer? I was certain they carried some of their fly rods...

They sold me the trophys and I didn't notice any of the tfo rods. That would be great as I have an accumulating stack of 3 x 100 gc for dave just looking for a use. Im going to drop by this week anyway. Cheers
