Berkley Saltwater Gulp Squid

Who has used these for Halibut?

I have read a couple rave reviews in fishing publications, but looking for some unbiased feedback. How did it perform versus real bait? Was it worth the high price tag?

While expensive, the Gulp squids do fish really good. No need to juice it up as the Gulp product constantly releases scent into the water.

Last time out to Swiftsure, both lines straight down:
B2 pearl white on starboard, w/salmon belly - x 2
Berkley Gulp Squid w/salmon belly - on port x 0

Do I think Gulp works, and will they fish, yep!
But, it is kind of hard for me to justify the price, after the last trip? Just need to get some sent down there!

Salmon belly is tasty and likely worth more than the $15.00 Gulp squid. We all need our Omega fats Charlie, eat'em.
Go with a west coast guru's plan.
quote:4 Rods, two rear rods with 1.5 pound balls, side rodes with 2 pounders, spreader bars, with the large white power grub. Hit the mud, and drag them along at about 1 knot if the drift won't do that for you. Standard ops on the West Coast. Catch for my ride was into the hundreds again this season, so it ain't at all likely I'm gonna switch!

Tight Lines!

True enough, but he didn't ask what the best value was, he asked if the Gulp fishes good...and it does. B2's are a good product too.

Last year a 254lb butt on Berkley squid.... guess what-- I think I will pay the extra. [8D]

Nothing worked better on Big Bank out of Ucluelet. Out did everything I had. Best thing is it didn't seem to attract dog fish.

All I use for hali is the Berkley Power bait GULP. The best deal I did this year was 30 packages of 8", 2 in a bag GULP glow squid on eBay from a fishing store bankrupcy, $30 usd for all........ should be good for awhile........:D:D SS

X2, but I wouldn't say "stinks", I would say "Smells"! I don't use "rotten bait" bait for fishing! :)

Report from yesterday at The Wreck:

The Gulp Squid: 3 to hand, up to 35 plus pounds.
The Grub: 1 to hand - 10 pounds.
Bait: Dogfish after dogfish - pulled from the operation.

So yes, they work, and work well IMHO.

Cheers,

So how are you guys rigging them up? Do you need to feed the line through with the help of a long needle? Or just pushing a large circle hook through the top and out somewhere in the bottom 3rd?

You can thread them in a 1 lb jig head or you can thread them on a tandem hook-up and run it off a spreader bar with a 1-2lb weight.

I use a leader about 1 1/2 feet long. But5 my buddy uses at least a 3ft leader and does quite well. The important thing is to maintain the line as close to vertical as possible

I have the two hook metal leader set up you can buy in the package, spreader bar and a 2 lb ball.I have a pack of the white grubs .Tried it a few weeks ago when in nootka. (NO luck)I found myself questioning my hook set up.never seemed to hang rite??? How do you guys put the hooks in??

No place I would rather be (FISH ON)

Work really well with a strip of pink belly trailing! Got 2 35/45 out at the dink last week on them.
