Bella Coola to Shearwater

Hey Dark, thanks for the report. I will be going up with SeaWolf the second week of Aug. We will leave via Port Hardy by boat and I was wondering what size of boat and power were you running? Thanks, SS

I run a 22 ft alicraft aluminum cuddy with a 200hp i/o I also have a yamaha 9.9 hi thrust kicker which I was concerned about but it seems to push my boat just fine even in a riptide with a strong wind

Thanks for the reply Dark, our boat will be very similiar... glad to hear you had a safe and enjoyable trip. Carole tells me the Coho should be pretty thick around the second week of August.... hoping to find some Prawns and Crabs as well. SS

Dark,
I am heading to Shearwater in the third week of August. Like you we plan to put in at Bella Coola and boat down. As I have never made the trip before I have several questions for you. What is the parking like in Bella Coola for a truck and boat trailer? Which route did you take and approximately how long did it take you to make the trip? I would be grateful for any advice you or anyone else who has made the trip can pass along.

Thanks.

Ian, there is parking in Bella Coola it costs 10.00 to launch and 5/day for parking. We took the Dean channel I think it is about 70 miles to Shearwater. If you take the burke channel its alittle longer but you can stop at the narrows and fish halibut on the way.
They say its best to travel these channels before 10 am as the wind can blow in these channels, with that being said we travelled after 10 on lots of days and never ran into anything that my boat couldn't handle. Keep a sharp eye out for floating logs as I have never seen so much junk in the water as I saw in these channels.

To Striper Sniper and Seawolf

You guys should very much enjoy staying at Whiskey Cove. Carole and Vern are very good hosts and they run a good outfit. I just got back from the area Tues. nite. I was going to stop in and visit them but time was very limited. Hopefully I'll see them in August.
Fishing was "spotty" to say the least. I guess I really didn't expect much more as it was a bit early. It really turns on right after the 1st of August. You guys are going at just the right time.
Are you guys dragging your boat from Alta. all the way to Port Hardy?
Port Hardy to Whiskey Cove is a very long boat-ride.
If you can get to Bella Coola pulling the boat the boat ride is right around 2 hrs. to Whiskey Cove and you do not need to pay for a ferry ride or sit in the truck for hrs. on end.
I've been sport fishing the central coast for 15 years. In past years we have been lucky enough to limit out on just about every trip.
Hope you have a good trip.

Thanks excalibur.
The Sniper is now a resident of Comox. Despite builing a moat around my beloved Island and two sets of rock walls, the Albertans keep coming.

We will be boating up from Port Hardy. It is just under 100 NM as opposed to the 70 from Bella Coola. I've done it twice in my Campion 542, and the Sniper's Striper is a few feet longer and heavier. We are equipped with Radar and a GPS. End of July into August brings the fairest of weather on the coast. It will be a heck of a trip.

I've been going to the area for 8 years now camping at Shearwater. Nicest part of the fishing is there is 1 closure in the whole area at McLoughlin Bay plus of course the RCA's. No over and under Bingo of the West Coast.

We are looking forward to Whiskey Cove, the amenities look great. It will be the Sniper's first trip there.

Hey Guys,

I am heading up that way on the 30th. Going to Spider Island looking for some hogs. Going to be in the area for about 5 days. Has anyone been fishing up in the Purple Bluff Spider Island area? Wondering how the fishing is. Will be my 7th year up there, love that area. We have really been hitting them hard here in Hardy over the last week, some nice big fish, some over 40lbs.

Travel Safe and tight lines,

Hey BearCove. We need to find a place to park in Hardy. 2 years ago I parked at your place or perhaps it was your dad's. Was wondering if you still do long term parking at the cottages?

Hey SeaWolf,

You would have parked at my Dads, I own the Bear Cove Cottages, you drive past them up the hill to the parking lot. He still does the long term parking thing. You can call him at his work number to set something up. His name is Gord and he can be reached at 250-949-9988

Thanks. I remember him saying you guys had been up to Spider Island area. It is a great area to explore. Good luck on the trip.
