Bear Attack at Port Renfew Marina

i agree with wolf, the guys who jumped in and killed this bear are heros for sure, and have way bigger balls than most, just think how many people probably were just watching, to attack a bear with a gaff, hammer or knife takes some nerve, we are talking close proximity battle here, i know next time i am in renfrew i will buy any of the guys a beer that saved that mans life, i think bruce likes miller

They are STUDS and should be saluted for their valor. What they did was impressive and uncommonly humane. I wish them all a speedy recovery.

I wonder what steps will be taken to reduce the bear traffic at the marina. I can tell you tenting was a bit interesting and perhaps a little unnerving this summer. I woke up about 2AM to a bear sniffing around outside, real nice Definitely a camper next year, maybe even some spray and a gaff.

We Are Canadian, eh!

This is not about guns! This is about guys who risked their lives to help another human survive a vicious attack. I have fished out of PR for 17 years and I am inspired by their bravery. I hope I am man enough to fight for another as these guys did.

Yeah it sure makes you think of what you would do in that situation. I like to think I would have jumped in had I been there, but that is really easy to say and takes a huge amount of courage and instinct in that situation. Way to go guys! We need more people like you in this world.

Also makes a guy think about how he should be prepared. Imagine, you're standing there, bear's swimming across the river, kinda cute; bear gets up on the dock, hmmm - naa; bear jumps right in in about half a second and starts eating you.

I'll make a habit from here out to not underestimate anything a bear might do - and quickly look around for an exit and some kind of weapon if a bear is even in the vicinity. Carry bear spray while salmon fishing? In PR for sure.

I agree with Nimo. What steps are being taken to help prevent it from happening again... or like wolf said ... to a child. This incident could have been way worse.
Guns and poison are not the answer - come on people.
There are things that Marina could do to help make it safer and less attractive to bears.
I hope the man attacked is doing better and recovering. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Latest news said the guy was teasing the bear. He was casting a salmon towards it and reeling it back in. The bear came across and got in his boat. He threw the salmon out to get the bear to go out after it, but the bear was after him instead.

While my first reaction to the idea of fishing for bears was laughter, I think it would show a clear disregard for the animals and everyone's safety.

I sincerely hope he wasn't taunting the bear. Can anyone back this up as this up as fact or is it just rumor? In this day and age I would think people have more common sense and respect for nature; regardless of where they are.

Really, it's just another bear attack. YAWN, bear tries to eat someone, bear gets caught and killed. If this was in the interior, it probably wouldn't have made news.

Now if it was a Humbolt squid hauling someone off the dock, THAT would be a story.

I didn't hear anything about it getting taunted from the guys who were involved. I was up the day after it happened. I spoke to Bruce about it, I didn't hear anything about the guy getting attacked taunting it, nor have I seen anyone doing anything to them but taking pictures of them, or making noise by pounding gas cans to scare them off the dock.

I have boated near the shore for my guests to take pictures of them, they usually take a quick look at the boat and lumber away quickly.

One of the other guides heard back from the CO's that took the body (I heard this info second hand) that the thing was anywhere from 18-22 years old, maybe it just went senile. I have not seen the other bears around since the event.

But then again, you can't predict what a wild animal is going to do when it gets used to handouts from people, and then the handouts dissaplear as fishing slows down and the weather gets worse.

There was no fishing for bears at all it comes down to a sick bear and a guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.The bear was very old and had a bad liver,it only wieghed 180lbs.

Good on Bruce,Jarred,ED and all the others.I heard something about an award of bravery for the boys,as well as Jay Leno for bruce.
