Barkley Sound February Reports

Well, the last couple of weeks has been tough fishing around here. Some fish were being taken prior to that, but the last 14 days or so had really dropped off.

The commercial trollers were getting 0-1 fish per day last week even.

I spent the whole day Monday fishing without a hit. I covered a LOT of water and fished from 8-5. Didn't mark any bait anywhere either.

Needless to say, I opted for rest yesterday instead of fishing. The wife and I decided to have a quick ride out of the harbour to watch the sun set when she was done work though, and I'm glad we did. I marked 2 good schools of baitfish in the 30 minutes we were out. One at about 90 feet, the other right on the bottom in about 220. Another school surfaced not to far off the port side and I saw some gulls feeding and an eagle nail one.

Saw nothing like this the last few trips out.

I was beginning to wonder...

So yeah, the reports haven't been great by any means. There was quite a bit of bait in early January and it was pretty good but just tapered down from there it seems.

I think the arrival of the herring are going to change things significantly over the next 10 days. I'll be out later in the day for a few hours and report back.

As it sits right now - it is ANYBODYS derby!!!

Gimee the gaff!!!

Thanks for the report Jeff...sure hope a few show up over the next 8 days! As much as I enjoy bobbing around on the ocean drinking 1516...I'm craving that feeling you get when a rod starts pounding!

Thanks Jeff... Does anyone know if there is a boundary for the Derby [?]....FD

Didn't get out again, but there is suddenly bait everywhere! I mean everywhere! Splashing on the surface, schools abounding on the sounder, this should be the start fellas.

Dont think there is an official boundary Felix. Just what mother nature allows.

Gimee the gaff!!!

Quick update for you guys.

I didn't fish all weekend, but had 3 boats worth of guys fishing out of Mills Landing and knew a few guys fishing out of Island Fish Camp (Schleevo - how are you?)

Not a lot of fish being taken still, but some, and beauties. A 22lbr from Swale on Friday afternoon, a 16 from the same place Saturday for the one boat. Schleevos crew took 2 8lbrs and a 4 at Kirby Saturday, didn't get a report from their Sunday fish. The other two fishing out of Mills got a couple of small ones each is all.

Still seemingly nothing in Vernon yet from who I've spoken with and I don't know of anyone fishing Rainy/Sarita or Samateo either.

Prawning and crabbing remain FANTASTIC.

Anyones derby, gonna be a matter of hours put in I think.

Gimee the gaff!!!

Thanks for the update.

22 lbs would most likely be a derby winner - hopefully there are a few of those for me this weekend.

Looks like we might get some sun, but windy.

Hey FD, took the road on friday night was -2 hour and 20 min. Going home on sunday took hour 40, was pretty sloppy. Osama we missed you at the bash, heard you hit the hay early.:D. when are you guys going to pick tickets up?

Rained hard last night, road will be even worse than Sunday.

Slivo - yep, missed the bash, ours started far to early...

We'll monitor 68, call for Osama. I'll be fishing in two different boats, one is the 22 alluminum Mills Landing boat and the other a 22 fiberglass 'Wet Dreams 2' - Albernifishers boat.

Couple more nice fish taken over the last couple of days...

By the way, the beard has been cropped, camo for the big competition!

shaping up to be a good time:)...for an added bonus, the weather report's improving and there's a few fish around.
Just hope I'm not too hung over to fish!

Backatit - Save some room in the cooler for a fish or two. It's going to be fun watching you puke all over yourself as you bring in a fish - Good times!
