Barkley Sockeye Opening

Opened as scheduled today Folks...

This morning's report:

The Inlet was HOT this morning! Most of those in the know were limited regardless of angler numbers on board prior to 7 am! Sweet! Shallow fish, many jumpers, and the sounders ringing like sleigh bells! Bit of a Gong Show at the ramp though. When I went by before 5, there were NO parking spots left, and the launch line-up was lengthy. Upon the return pass, there were still a few disgruntled boaters waiting to get into the water, as the Lucky early-birds were attempting to get their rigs out of the water. Definitely pays to be EARLY! With that type of show already underway, imagine what a cluster**** it will be should the FN center be placed there, eating much of the available parking, access to the cleaning station, and restricting traffic flow! EEEEK! [V]
Thankfully that hasn't happened.... yet...

I wandered down to Papermill, expecting the usual masses to be in full swing. I was surprised upon my arrival to find only a small handful on either side. I watched somewhat intently as I BS'd with a few of those I know, and over the course of 2 hours but 3 were hooked and one landed amongst the dozen or so anglers. Even the FN netters slowly wandered off downstream or pulled their boats off the water after a spell. River temp is over 17 degrees, and if that warms even a small bit now, the fish will become even more reluctant to wander in. Good news for Inlet anglers as that will cause them to school up out there in accessible areas. Didn't even set up my rod this morning, being quite content to simply watch.

So, it has indeed started. Appears the Best Bet is out on the Inlet for now. From the reports, numbers out there are very good, so one can well expect some success!

Time to PLAY!!!! [^]

Cheers,
Nog

Home again.

Well the kid wanted to net, and the sox co-operated, he only bashed one on the head but made another quick swipe and got it anyhow!
The boat beside us enjoyed the father/son fire drill ;)
He reeled in his 2 and then netted my 2.

*limit in 90 minutes, at 30' with green flasher and bubblegum on 27", at Dunsmuir, SLOW speed
I use bigger hooks.
We had all 6 hits on one rod! I was getting nervous that we'd lose the setup and run out of luck.
Piles of boats but everybody played nice at the China ramp both in and out.

It is great to see sox again, they are the perfect fishery for kids to learn on.

I use 4/0's in tandem and 5/0's single. For one of my hootchies which has a swivel built into the head, I use a single 5/0 siwash hook. Remember to crimp the barbs:)

A friend and I fished China Creek today and got our limit no problem, released a few as well. Fishing is still pretty good.

Hello!

Windup ball tourney this weekend so can't fish ;-(
Maybe tomorrow morning before the first game at 11am!

Any reports from today?

Thanks in advance.

Roo.

Still good. I was out for my first time this morning. Limits (for 4) within a couple of hours. Most boats were in Nahmint but I heard it was good in other traditional spots. Anywhere between 20-50ft produced, that also where I spotted all the fish on the sounder. All sizes, my first one was pretty small, I will be abit more selective tomorrow.

Whaler, if I may, some thoughts:

Your 6/22 ratio can improve, aim for at least 50%.
You aren't playing them with the rod tip up are you?
Keep the tip to the side, still 90degrees to the line, and that way they get way closer to the net before dancing.
One other thought is to consider how the rod is handled when the hit is seen, too many folks try to rip the hook out of the mouth.

Roo.

Out Saturday morning at Hocking for a few hours - went 3 for 7.
I wish I had my camera to post a picture of the boats - easily over 100 boats from Hocking to Nahmint, and at least another 50 boats at China Creek. Lots of fish coming in.

Great fishing this morning, best (or close to) I've seen it since I started in 2002. Spoons and glow hootchies working for me..........keep you flashers stacked as close as possible.
