Barkely in early june

Unfortantly the way things played out i cant come back to the coast this summer except for 2 weeks in august.Pretty rough blow since i live to fish. Managed a week out the last few days of may/first few of june.

Planning on hitting barkely up for a night or two and sleeping on the boat, camping or maybe accomidations. Any advice on where to stay?

What is the weather this time of year? still a bit unpredictable? I only have a 17.5ft so would be limited to 5-7 mile on decent days but to my understanding hali should be decent. Will the columbians be running by then? Any advice on gear? or overall advice on trip?

Early June is too early to really hit the Columbian run. They will start in earnest from mid June onward. If you only have a 17.5 foot boat I would not recommend doing any off shore trips unless it is dead calm. The minimum boat in my view is 24 feet, with full radar/gps. Most of us fish hoochies and spoons off shore. Not much need for bait.

Its a pretty seaworthy 17.5 with gps', vhfs, kicker ect but yea the offshore will be a weather depending issue. Did some archive searching and seems hit and miss time of year. Oh well the areas nice enough to enjoy without hot fishing.

Yes, you can get some great feeder chinooks inside Barkley Sound. Just use lots of small hoochies, spoons or bait with green flashers.

Kelly, there's some great fishing out there right now and you don't have to run too far from Bamfield. Seapool, Beale and the green can buoy have all been producing lately, and there's a lot of bait around. Hali's from Beale out to 5 mile. I'm sure there's more out there, but wind is an issue, especially this week. Check out the latest fishing report at www.millslanding.com.

Hi Kelly, best way to find out is to check the online calendar at www.millslanding.com. It'll show you what's available and you can just call or email us for info/reservations or reserve online. The fishing in June in the last 2 years has been good, we had a couple of days last year where we limited guests in front of the general store on the west side of Bamfield...so you don't have to go far.

Cheers.

Cree can be really hot in June too.

Take only what you need.

Kelly,
Not trying to take away from Mills Landing, it's excellent. If it's full and you want to sleep on the boat, try the Port Alberni Yacht Clubs marina in Robbers Passage. For a reasonable fee you can tie up, unload your stuff onto the warf, use a picnic table. They have showers and outhouses as well.

If you don't want to sleep on the boat, try Poett Nook Campground, they have a bunkhouse for about $50 a night, kitchen facilities, heat, etc

Both are a bit further inside than Mills Landing, but if you need a place to stay, both are excellent choices (from someone who has stayed in them all)

Hey stress med thanks for the info. This is turning into a family deal so we wont be sleeping on the open 17fter. I will definatly look into that for later this year in august!

Hey Kelly, we have similar boats and wouldn't worry about offshore as long as there are no warnings. It is usually calmer in the mornings and if starts to blow up you can run in pretty quick if you have to.I have some waypoints for 5 mile and 7 mile and another spot I found last year that was a great producer for the hali. Wish I could go but only two trips a year and one of them is Bamfield in September. It's a great area and if the fishing is slow there's a lot of exploring to do. May/early June can be pretty good around here too.Get a room at the Lasqueti Hotel or sleep on the boat at Squitty Bay. Definitely not the west coast but the fishing could be great. I'm hoping it will be a good year although it hasn't exactly started that way.BRS

I fished just outside of Cape Beale once with bamfield resident in early July as I remember the weather was cooler with rain and sun. But the swells were very high, looked like boat was climbing over the water mountains. Bamfield residents as expert boaters are very familiar with these waters when the weather goes bad. I agree, the weather gets warm, calmer waters.

Hey Kelly last summer I stayed at a "resort" called seabeam in bamfield. It is more like a hostel with a common bathroom, kitchen and living room. You rent a bedroom with a couple of bunkbeds. It is a bit run down but good enough for a couple fishermen that is for sure! The best part about seabeam is your not even 3 minutes away from the wall and argyle lighthouse (i think thats the name). Great feader fishing at dawn and dusk!

We stayed there for 3 nights and twice we caught fish right as the sun was going down. If we were staying anywhere else we would have had to pull our gear earlyier to get back to the camp.

Hey Kelly. Look forward to seeing you again!

You won't have to go far offshore to get a hali, in fact if you have pacience and an anchoring system. - not offshore at all. Plus, you might hit the early push of Yankee fish - tough to say, it's a good surge but not easy to time, a lot like that one good week at the end of May/beginning of June off French Creek for those big whites. Shallow fishery right around the corner into Keeha or even Pachena. Need good weather to hit them in your boat.

On the other hand, there are always feeders somewhere and in the size boat you have you'll be able to fish somewhere on most days. Like searun says gear wise - you'll cook up something. The tourists still won't have managed to kill off all the inshore lings either...

Crabs ahoy!
