Any comments on lures that come with barbed hooks ... do you change out the hooks to barbless or do you just file down the barbs that are on the hook(s) provided with the lure?

Why do they even come with barbs ... it seems to me everything around V.Isle is relegated to barbless ... is it simply a function of manufacturer jurisdiction?

Are there any fish species around V. Isle where a barb is good to go?

Probably dumb questions but ... I'd rather get learned than remain ignorant and this forum does a excellent job of providing 'dummies' with good info.

Oh ... also ... why are two cannonballs ... that appear identical in the aisles of Canadian Tire ... priced so radically differently ... one's for 20 bucks and the other about 50 ... aren't they all lead balls ... is there an alloy difference or something like that ... and does one act differently than the other in the water ... I figured a 10lb weight is a 10lb weight so I bought the cheaper ball .. and it had a fin on it while the more expensive one didn't ... what's up with that?

Regards.

You can change the hook to a barbless or just take a pair of pliers and squeeze the barb til it's flush.
I have no answer about the cannon balls. I didn't even know Canadian tire sold them. I figure that you usually get what you pay for. Maybe one is better quality?

All lures come barbed because they are fine to use unless you are targetting salmon. Don't bother filing, just squeeze with pliers. We target Halibut on WCVI with barbed spoons all of the time, when fished off a spreader bar. As for other lures, I remember many days as a kid laying waste to rockfish and flounder with hoochies, simply because they were only a buck, and you could use anything as a weight.

Canadian tire still has canonballs that are from the summer when lead was expensive, probably just their inventory program still shows a few at 50 dollars. They'll catch it on inventory day.
