Baits and flys to use for rainbow trout, on victoria area lakes

Hey all, im trying to get a "little black book" on the rainbows local to Esquimalt, particularily on Thetis, Elk, and Langford lakes. If anyone can give me some baits/rigs or some flies that they like to eat, that would rock! Thanks!

This is a more common method for trout....
Carolina Slider rig: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsIOo8qd0RI
Use 4-8 # line, experiment with leader length, 1 ft to 5ft is pretty standard.

On the hook you want to use Powerbait eggs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUbQ2iPinG0

Everything in these 2 vids can be bought at Canadian Tire, no running around between places.
Just cast out the rig, secure your rod, reel most of the slack out of the line and watch it go !

It's hard to go wrong with pink -- any shade -- but having at least a couple of colours on hand isn't a bad idea.

Powerbait works well, as Dan says, and I've often used it, but I've had more luck with Gulp! Oddly, both products are made by the same outfit. I think Gulp! may be marginally more expensive.

Good luck.

For flies a #8 Doc Spratley (black) is a pretty consistent pattern for rivers and lakes. I've caught trout and bass in pretty much every lake around here on it. It represent nothing in particular but a little of everything. I'd get one with an olive body as well. Other flies are simple Carey, olive pumpkinhead and small leach patterns.

A black wooly bugger is pretty tough to beat, it will produce year round. Size 8 is a good place to start.
