bait..?

If anyone knows a good source for Octo and squid in the lower mainland I would appreciate that info as well. Don't know why, but it used to be very easy to find, but now I've only found it in specialty seafood stores. Kind of pricey buying bait that way.

For packaged California squid try Superstore. The price went up this year but they go for around 11$ for a 2lbs pack . There is also a Vietnamese specialty store on 33rd and Victoria and they carry assortment of octo, squid and other seafood items that you can use for bait.

Try T&T Supermarkets, if it came out of the ocean they probably sell it. For anchovies go see Merle at Merle's Bait and Tackle. Unfortunately he moved out to Mission but his prices are good. Shared a case lot of anchovies (40 packages) with a bud and they cost just over $5 per.

Are you guys rigging squid in a bait holder of some sort? Are you using for salmon or Hali / bottom fish?

I generally use squid in combination with other baits that are more durable like Octo or salmon bellies for halibut fishing.

I have rigged cut squid once dyed with jello crystals in a bait holder for Salmon, but there wasn't much around at the time so it wasn't really a good test on its effectiveness. I cut it into the shape of herring Strips and rigged it in a strip teaser.

Ok thanks.
It would be interesting to see how squid works under fair / good conditions vs. plastic.

Like The BIGguy I too use it in combination with salmon belly for halibut. Also use squid by itself when fishing for cabezon. I find squid tend to attract lots of dog fish in the summer months though. BTW, I am not a big fan of cuttlefish as bait cuz they tend to stain the gelcoat on the boat when you punctured them in the wrong place.

i ended up going to hubcity fisheries, i got a 28lb box of squid and a 20lb box of herring for 74$
ill be using this bait fir crabbing, prawning, and halibut
Were the herring frozen into a block or loose? I went to the herring sale in Victoria a couple of years ago and got a bucket, but found packaging and freezing a pain with a little chest freezer. Someone told me for a buck a pound they would freeze them for you. Sounded like a great deal as long as they weren't frozen in a big block, but I never followed up.
