With such a precipitous decline in coho and Chinook salmon in recent years, why aren't we being overrun with bait. A number of years back when predatory bait fish declined in Ontario, bait died by the millions. Why isn't this happening here?
There are massive amounts of bait in the straight of georgia right now. Herring I believe. It's a feeding frenzy for birds, porpoise and salmon alike. When the water is calm out there you can spot massive schools of the bait surfacing and also on the sounder. I was marking them all the way from van to gabriola last weekend.
Just head off Ucluelet in August and you'll find massive schools of pilchards. I was in Barkley Sound last week and we ran into huge schools of baitfish.
