What kind of knot do you use to join the 2 on your mooching reel?
I use a UNI to UNI,sometimes called the double uni.
I heard the surgeons'knot is no good? Anyone know why?

Thanks..

Sounds like the surgeons knot is fine but not in this case. It is used for entirely different applications.

I like the albright knot, it fast and has not failed (although it do have to ensure it very tight when it is first formed - it has failed sometimes as I have tightened initially).

The blood knot is the one you want. It's used to tie two types of line of similar diameter together. Backing to fly line, braided to mono, etc... The surgeon's knot is also a good one, but tends to get stuck in eyelets and at your reel, but has the benefit of being super quick and easy to tie.

Maybe a question too -- why do you use both braided and mono on your mooching reel? I use a combination of fly line and braided on the fly rod mainly because the fly line is sooooo expensive, but mono is relatively cheap and strong so why not use it exclusively and not have to worry about the strength of a knot?

Hmmm... different knots were designed for use with different types of line, having different construction and different line weights? For example the nail knot that I use to join my fly line to my leader… is NOT a good knot to use to join braid to mono! I use 25lb mono and mostly use the uni to tie hooks and swivels. It is fast and easy, but would not use the uni or double uni to join two lines of any weight. I agree with TenMile, blood knot would probably be the best for this application.

I snell a lot of hooks and use the uni a lot to do that. While I have had knot failures using most knots... I have never had a snelled hook fail!

But, would have to agree with TenMile again... why use both on your mooching reel?

Good ? guys. Answer is a simple one. My father gave me a spool containing 1000yds of Premium Brand 80lb.test braided.

I have 4 salmon reels to re-spool and since I have the braided I was wondering which knots would work best joining the two.

I'm just a working stiff trying to save a buck. :)

Islander Reels recommends using a non-mono backing on their reels. They prefer Dacron or other non streatch line. I use Dacron on my MR2's. Their site says all mono can tighten to the point of damaging the arbor.
