B.C. ferries, over length sale

Just asinine to think that our coastal ferry system can be self-funding unless it were reduced to the 3 or 4 busiest routes, in which case private enterprise would be all over it because there'd be money to be made. Make them service all routes as part of the deal and there'd be no takers at all. So why expect the current crown corp to survive on minimal subsidy? Another reason why the crown corp system is so questionable - ICBC in perpetual conflict of interest between insurance, licencing and enforcement, Hydro being milked like a cash cow and spending **** all on infrastructure or salmon mitigation.

Seems to me that some bridges between major gulf islands could make some big savings over the long term. You could make several islands act like one large island and allow the ferry system to be rationalised. Would mean a bit more driving for island residents but could probably improve service as well as economy, one large ferry is less money than several small ones. Forget the hyper-pricey link to the mainland across the Georgia Strait, just link the gulf islands together. Skip connecting them to Vancouver Island too, the resident want to keep the gulf islands, well, islandy. Residents of the combined islands would have a larger voice with respect to ferry service and other infrastructure issues too.
